Don't know where you're flying from... but one of my co-workers always flies Spirit Airlines from Detroit to Florida, she says they're really cheap and good service.

It's not super deluxe, but it has been fine and really cheap every time I have flown AirTran.

Yup, I've flown AirTran a bunch and they're fine. I think they're running a sale right now, too. I would also check Southwest and JetBlue for cheap flights to Florida - AtLast tells me that every JetBlue plane has TV screens in the back of each seat, too!

Airtran is fine, and you can upgrade to business class for like $35. It's totally worth it.

I have never flown AirTran but I fly Southwest a lot. They are almost always on time, direct and pretty cheap. Plus if you fly 8 round trips they give you a free flight and you can't beat that.

The one bad thing is they don't assign seats but as long as you check in 24 hours before you are good to go with an A pass and can pick any seat. If you have to go to the airport knowing where you are going to sit they aren't for you.

My two cheep options leaving from Richmond were AirTran and Delta. Delta was about $37 more.

I've flown Air Tran about 10 times from either Newark or Philladelphia to Orlando or Tampa and they were always at least 2 hours late, sometimes more than that. It didn't matter whether I was going to FL or coming home. They were always late both ways. The flights themselves are fine, but the lateness irked me and I quit flying with them.

I was always flying late in the day, so you might have better luck if you book your flights for the first ones in the morning.

My two cheep options leaving from Richmond were AirTran and Delta. Delta was about $37 more.

I screwed up - had looked at AirTran ($99 each way from RIC to WPB) and didn't book immediately. By the freaking NEXT morning, the flight TO WPB had gone up to $196. In a panic, I booked the flight - didn't want to wait until the return trip went up too. THEN, I checked Expedia...US Air was $250 round trip - shorter layovers in nice Charlotte airport as opposed to AirTran's lengthy layovers in Atlanta. Oh well. At least I'm going to WEF/Littlewood for the weekend!!!

(AirTran upgrades were EXPENSIVE and already booked, as I learned when I tried to pick my seats...NONE available at the rate I'd booked - had to pay $10 more for regular coach - nothing special - seats! :brickwall: :soapbox:

Always be sure to go on your computer and delete the "Cookies" the air fare websites put on there before you go back the next day to check airfares. They put cookies on your compter that somehow make the airfares higher each time you go back to the site. If you delete the cookies often the fare will show up with the original cheap price again.

I just flew a round trip on Skybus.
It is cheap.
You might land in an airport "close" to your destination. For Example... Newburgh,NY is "close" to the usual NYC airports :innocent: , Ft Lauderdale rather than West Palm or Miami, Oakland rather than San Francisco.
On some flights you can snatch a $10 seat! Plan waaaaay ahead. If you miss your $10 seat, who cares! I paid $80 rather than $300,$400...

They are not very organized, but the staff was ok. Jets are brand new! Landing on flight #1 was rather bumpy (but any pilot could do THAT). No reserved seats. You can pay an extra $10 to board early. I didn't. I waited until I was the last person, walked to the back of the jet and had three seats to myself ;) On the way back I did the same thing ;) Who cares where you sit!

I took only carry on luggage. I usually do anyhow. Checked bags have a fee ($5?)

Try it! It was FINE!

Duffy, I'm sure if you ask one of the flight attendants, they will take good care of you!

what about the regional flights? my mom and her friends fly from Newark to PB each year for "Spring Break" ( :innocent: they are almost 60!) I think they do american eagle or some other small regional flights.

See out here, I prefer flying out of the small airports. We have two-one in town that flies to seattle and one that is 25 miles away that flies to Seattle, Boise and Salt Lake City. The closest big airport is 1 1/2 hrs away, and during the winter the highway up there can be a bitch to drive on. When I fly home to NJ, I fly on a puddle jumper to Salt Lake and then change planes to a 757 to Newark.

BH1-the bumpy landing probally had to do with the newbie pilot that was probally flying the plane. The regional companies tend to hire non-contract pilots (ie. much smaller salaries) who in turn get experience, then get a job with the big airlines ($$$).

Our pilots that fly out here are really nice. When we flew to NJ this summer, my BF who had never been on a plane before was staring in the cockpit as we boarded. The pilots were eating and turned around and said "pretty cook huh?" and J laughed and agreed. The one then goes "I just wish I knew what this one did" and pointed to a big red button. I thought my BF was going to bolt right then and there!
