TOTALLY Agree with you Trial!! I have not read all the responses but I have a feeling they are about the pedigree commercial with the collie mix in the pen and the people walk by and he looks like hey where are you going, That makes me sad. BUT I agree that its not the professional breeders its the people that own one dog, of mediocre quality and think they need to breed them, OK whats even worse, theses idiots that are breeding mutts and giving them cute names, Daisy dogs, LAbra doodles cockapoos snoodles OMTIH That is where I want to strangle the people not only that are breading them but the ignorant suckers that pay money for them, THOSE people are spending money on another mutt when thousands are being destroyed each year! THAT is one of my biggest peeves! I will get off my soap box now!

A Kommondor breeder turned me down for a pup. She knew I had clue how "sensitive" is that breed. I'll bet she has bred a max of a dozen pups in her whole career. I was pissed, but she was right. That's not a very friendly breed, and it would have been horrific in the barn! That is a good breeder! Too bad for every good breeder there are probably a thousand bad ones (at least). If you've never seen a Kommondor here's the club website: http://clubs.akc.org/kca/ |

I think it's important to realize that adoption may not be for everyone. I have 3 dogs, 2 were rescues, and one from a breeder. I do not feel guilty about the one I got from a breeder, we did research and knew we wanted a Pug. We applied to several Pug rescues, waited a few months, and got no response. So we went to a breeder and got the lovely Mu Shu. For families with small children, they may not "qualify" to adopt a dog from a rescue, or they may not want to risk getting a dog with an unknown history and bringing it into their home with their children or other pets. It does sicken me to see people who have a dog and decide to breed it to their cousin/neighbor/buddy/coworker's dog "to make money". That is the breeding that is most detrimental, I think, and needs to be stopped. The good breeders are all about improving the breed, and creating dogs that will be great companions for humans. Just because someone decides that they would like a purebred dog from a breeder doesn't make them a bad person. Just like the people who decide to have their own biological children instead of adopting are not bad people.

I guess what interests me about this is that horse people are some of the most "breed conscious" people around...how many of you would go to the shelter to find your next show horse? I know it's slightly different but yeah getting a dog from a shelter is alot different than buying a puppy from a breeder. Having grown up in a family that breeds and shows German Sheperds, I know how much love and attention goes into those puppies (I am talking specifically about a small hobby breeder) and how important it is to find the "right" family. Unfortunately a dog from the pound has usually been through some sort of trauma to find themselves there and thet are usually older. Not really a good comparison, but we adopted a cat from the shelter last year. They had "dog tested" her and she was fine and seemed to be very friendly - was probably about 5-6 yrs old. Had been living on the streets when they found her but obviously had been someone's pet at some point. Well unfortunately she was not dog safe, in fact she terrorized my incredibly friendly lab (who grew up with a cat and was totally non-threatening to the cat). She would actually go after my poor dog, even if she was just lying down paying the cat no mind. We couldn't trust her around the dog and it didn't improve after about 3 months so we ended up rehoming her (yes i know we were supposed to go back to the shelter but I couldn't bring myself to do that to her so we gave her to an acquaintance who was a great home for her with no dogs). I happened to have adopted my lab from the Guiding Eyes for the Blind, which I felt was a great compromise. I got a purebred (though certainly not show quality), personality tested and trained, friendly pet at age 8 weeks and we knew her background was stable and comfortable. I think breeders have a responsibility to continue to breed dogs to the breed standard to preserve the integrity and health of the breed. They also have a right to make a living selling them if people want them. One thing I do not like is these fad "designer" breeds. Labradoodles etc. In my mind they will just have the health problems of both labs and poodles now, great. Oh and the only thing worse that designer breed, pet and puppy stores selling "purebred dogs"....two words, puppy mills. |

This was our experience when we bought our black lab. My family and the DH's family always have had stray cats and dogs, or got them from shelters. They all have been wonderful in their own way, but the dogs all had behavioral issues that had to be worked on due to their prior experiences, and most also had health issues attributable due to poor breeding. We'd do it again in a heartbeat, but decided that just once we wanted to get a dog that we knew was well-bred and that we knew from day one what her life was like. We got our pet quality lab from a show breeder, and we had to fill out an extensive application, complete with photos of our fenced back yard. Application even asked us to estimate what we thought annual routine veterinary care would cost and how much/what type of daily exercise we thought a lab would need. Once we were approved, our puppy contract required that since we weren't going to show her we had to have her spayed, and that the breeder would take her back at any time in her life if we didn't want her for any/no reason. We also had a contract provision prohibiting us from driving with her in the open bed of a pick-up truck! (Not that the breeder would be in a position to enforce that one, but still . . .) The breeder even emailed me when our girl was around 5 months old to remind us of the spaying requirement and asked us to send her documentation of it once it was done. We've had her for almost 6 years and I still feel guilty sometimes that we bought a puppy rather than adopting. And our next dog definitely will be an adoptee from a shelter or rescue group. But this is a long way of saying that for those who opt not to adopt from a shelter, there are responsible breeders out there, and they're not hard to find. |

Having been an apartment dweller mostly I have had cats to come home to. My first was a barn kittah that I turned into house kittah - he was clingly and happy and sane and fun and black as night. My neighbor thought he got out of my apartment and knocked on my door with kittah #2 - a black with white bib wild child. I could not put him outside. I kept him. Wild child kittah years later pushed out a window screen and went exploring while citta kittah sat in the window crying. Wild child was squished on the road hours later......(RIP dear Cee Aye Tee) Citta kittah was heart broke - he and I were together until '99 when he told me it was time to let him go. (RIP Lucifer) Hiz-Tedness if from the Humane Society to cure my broken heart, after Luce's loss. I can't imagine getting a pure bred cat, or a pure bred dog for that matter. Those mixed breeds are so damm cute! Plus I have issues with puppy mills...... |

I went to the website to see whether there was any information about Echo. Can someone verify that he was in fact rescued. That way I can stop crying everytime I see that commerical. Here is the website. If you post a pic of your dog they will donate a dollar to a shelter. http://www.pedigree.com/03Adoption/Million...ic/Default.aspx |

Does anyone remember the MasterCard commercial with the Boston Terrier, Baxter, who is lost ad trying to find his way home? Along the way, he meets strangers who assist in his journey. Eventually, in the final commercial, Baxter finds his home. That one gets me! |
