My mom used to give donations in her cat's name.  So, mail would come to the house addressed to Maggie Hall.  You can donate anonymously.

I used to donate to Planned Parenthood in my dad's name (Republican Right to Lifer) and would laugh when he'd freak at the envelopes to him from them.

DQ, that is the funniest thing I've heard in a WHILE.

DQ, that's the one I was talking about in the other thread! Echo always makes me cry. That commercial doesn't make me want to go out and buy Pedigree, it makes me want to go adopt all of the dogs so that they feel loved and not sad. :,(

The Pedigree ones get me too. I was sure that "Echo" was a stunt/professional actor dog. How did someone find out the dog has been adopted?

The "I just want to go home" one would leave me blubering for hours.

The ad is a good reminder why we should not buy dogs.
Adopt ;)
Before you buy a dog, volunteer in an animal shelter for a few months ;)
I hope "Echo" found a good home.

What makes me sad about these commercials is how many people watch them, cry over them, feel genuine emotion over them, and still go to the breeder to buy a dog.
Trying to get the message out is one of my goals, and one of my biggest frustrations in life. Why people continue to buy dogs, when so many need homes, is simply mind boggling to me. I guess Pedigree should be on some level commended for doing these spots.
That being said, I do not understand Pedigree's sponsorship of Westminster, then they play these commercials during the DOG SHOW! :brickwall: I honestly think they started making these commercials to appease those people that were vocally objecting to their sponsorship of Westminster. The dog show itself has tried to cool the objections, they now encourage visitors to the dog show to adopt. Talk about trying to put a spin on things! I guess I see the world in black and white, and there is no middle ground with this issue. You either understand the importance of adoption, and you DO IT, or you don't understand.
Anyway, flame away, and I'm off my never ending :soapbox:. At least for now.

Yeah, if you think you are King Dung of Dung and HE Who Shall Make All the Rules heap just have kids - they will keep you humble, and on your toes. *wink*

The best part is he has yet to figure out WHY he gets those envelopes. My Step-mom even knows I do this and she laughs about it.

Well, I'm not going to flame you, but I will say that I don't think it's really fair to compare Westminster caliber breeders and dogs to shelter dogs. It's two opposite ends of the spectrum - the best quality purebreds with the most care and consideration when placing puppies, usually with a lifetime buy-back clause....to people who let their unneutered and unspayed mutts get knocked up in back alleys because they are too cheap and stupid to take them to the vet and/or fence their yards.

It's not Westminster breeders who cause unwanted dogs to end up in shelters.

Whether Pedigree should sponsor Westminster and run ads with shelter dogs is another issue....what might make more sense is for Pedigree to run ads during Westminster & other dog shows highlighting the great work done by many of the breed rescue groups.

I am in no way comparing Westminster show dogs to rescue dogs, although what's the difference? Dogs are dogs, they don't know if they are show quality or pound pups.
Of course these people are making a difference in the amount of dogs in shelters.
For every dog they buy, breed and sell, one more dog does not get adopted out of a shelter.
I just don't understand the crying and being moved by these commercials, and then not adopting, and I see it every day.

The Pedigree commercials are so sad to watch. I think about my 2 rescue dogs (the one was labeled aggressive at the Humane Society and the other one kept breaking out of the puppy mill she lived in-a rescue group got a hold of her) and what would have happened to them if we would not have adopted them. They are the best dogs.

I do get annoyed when my clients talk about getting the next designer dog or buying from a breeder (usually a puppy mill in disguise) because they are "saving" that dog when they are actually supporting the puppy mill. The Humane Societies/ASPCA's are so full and offer wonderful dogs-I think in some regards the Pedigree commercials and Animal Planet's Animal Precinct does help to get dogs and cats adopted. Awareness is the first step, but it will not end people's desire to have the "popular" dog, the "designer" dog, or that cute, little puppy in the store window.

I do not think breeders are bad, but I think something needs to be done about the over-breeding, possibly some legislature? This seems to be a hot topic. :(

If I could have 50 dogs I would! I am still bugging my SO to get another Jack. He has pacified my by saying that after we build our house I can get another-yea! :)

For those who donate to ASPCA, please be aware that there is no national organization which
supports the local humane societies in the nation. ASPCA is a New York based animal shelter
organization which also lobbies for animal welfare issues. If you wish to support your local
animal welfare group, your money would be best offered to the local animal shelter group.
Several organizations including ASPCA and HSUS are national organizations which try to
convince you they are the umbrella organization for all the nation's shelter and spay programs,
but they don't spend the money given them on helping support local shelter and spay programs.

Of course we could never say that good breeder's dogs could never end up in a shelter, but you might be surprised to know that many good breeders place their "pet" quality puppies as carefully as their "show" quality puppies. Even for a breeder that doesn't *care* about the puppies, they do not want additional progeny produced under their breeding program - it could make their good puppies/dogs less desireable. However, in our experience with our two purebred dogs produced in show breeding programs; the breeders are very stringent about where the puppies go - which is unfortunately one factor that people hold AGAINST good breeders ("they are so uppity and make you *qualify* to get a puppy").

Many "pet" quality puppies are registered with the AKC under "limited registrations" by the breeder, meaning they can never produced AKC litters. Many breeders also require spaying/neutering or do it themselves before ownership (especially males can be neutered when young) by holding a refundable deposit returnable only when proof of spaying/neutering is produced. Our younger dog grew outside the breed standard and the breeder offered to buy him back from us if we wanted. He was 15 months old at the time - and no way were we going to give him up, but we really appreciated the fact that he was sold to us by a quality breeder who had his interests in mind. If we really wanted a show dog, and he obviously wasn't going to be one, she would take him back and refund our money rather than see him end up elsewhere.

Somewhere there must be statistics, but I would put money on the fact that *most* dogs in shelters are not purebreds, and those that are were not bred by good, reputable breeders.

And, no, dogs are not just dogs. A surburban family with little kids should not get a border collie from the pound (or breeder), nor should a farmer buy a beagle and then be annoyed that it howls and roams while hunting.

I love dogs too - I would probably love any kind of dog, but I wouldn't assume that everyone else could be happy with every type of dog.
