I'm giving up anything fried. Many french fries because they are my fav. I did it last year and it was hard (ie. no chips when the roomies made fresh guac from avocados shipped from their parents in Texas, no jalapeno poppers when out at the barn with friends). Out of my three friends who said they'd do it, I was the only one to make it the whole time.

I was going to give up coffee but I figured it was better for everyone involved (roomies, BF, coworkers etc) that I didnt!

Don't feel bad about starting tomorrow. Last year I switched what I was giving up four times.

I'm giving up my morning muffin (I am a creature of habit so this will be difficult!)

then because I like to always put a positive spin on things.......(Pollyanna, Pollyanna, nah nah Pollyanna!)

I am going to try and 'do a good deed' every day. Something not in my usual agenda - something for someone else. Today I left fresh coffee and some homemade apple cinnamon 'sweet' bread for the fellow working on my house,

I will also fast on Fridays....

OK For your good deed today want to come shovel my Driveway with me?? LOL
I was born and raised a catholic, But am not practicing. I havent given up anything for lent since I was 14. Can I give up my husband?? <_<

I went to the Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner at my Mother's church and it got me to thinking. Where in the bible does it talk about Lent? Can anyone point it out to me?

CDE Driver, I am certainly no religious expert, but I am a practicing Catholic and I think this is what Lent is. The Bible does not specifically mention Lent, but Lent is based on Jesus' 40 days in the desert being tempted by Satan. Lent itself is, I believe, something that the Church (probably the Catholic church first) "made" but that is what it is based on. A time of prayer, fasting, and charity, a time to think about our life and how we can make ourselves better people, to prepare for the celebration of Easter.

Most Protestant denominations observe Lent to some degree, just as different people, no matter their religious persuasion, observe Lent to varying degrees.

CDE, you're going to have a hard time if you're looking for Catholic traditions to match up to the Bible.

I'm taking suggestions on what to give up! I may just try to run every day instead.

I'm not practicing either, but I will probably feel like I need to give up something for Lent for the rest of my life. How do you give up giving up something??

Actually, somewhere in the recesses of my Catholic grade school education, I'm remembering that the tradition is not to give up something like m&ms or my personal downfall, reese's peanut butter cups, but to give up something more along the lines of "talking behind people's backs" or to start praying more often or giving more of your time or money to a charity.

Course, I definitely eat more reese's than I do talk about people behind their backs! haha.

And my memory of "Lent" as a practice is similar to what Steph said - it is supposed to mirror the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert being tempted by Satan.

It's a good thing we are having wine at our party because soda wouldn't be allowed.

My mother gives up "sweets". All of them. But she also goes to mass once during the week (along with Sunday) during Lent.

I never used to give up anything. I did when I was very young, but stopped when I was 13 or so. I didn't start back up until I went to college and my 2nd year had another Catholic roommate and 2 Lutheran roommates. The four of us, along with two of our other best friends (who were also Catholic) decided together to give up something.
My boyfriend is Catholic so we do it together. I enjoy the meatless Fridays. It means I have to be extra creative when it comes to making dinner. We don't eat fish either, so it has to be strictly vegetarian. My ultra-super-delicious mushroom alfredo comes in handy. MMMMM.... :cloud9:
(Vegetarians, any good recipes you want to share???)
