At work there is a promotion coming - it means more money - but also more hours - so while I applied for it, I have reservations about getting it. I like to go home and GO HOME and ride.

Conversely, the horse groups I belong to I volunteer regularily and am there are wierd hours and even look to be on the boards of one of them.

There is now an Engineering social group board that is seeking a member and again I see it as "interferance with horse time"

And you?

Or am I alone in this wack behavior???? :psycho: :psycho:

Although I am no longer involved with horses, I can speak about my free time and hobbies vs. making more money.
I have been in healthcare working three 12 hour shifts for almost six years now. Every so often I think I should get a perdiem job, four days off a week is a lot of days. However, up till this time I still have not done it! As long as I can pay my bills, I refuse to trade my free time for more money. I think this is an age thing. When I was in my twenties and thirties, I had no hobbies and did nothing but work. Now I have reversed the balance. I have a million things I enjoy doing, and making more money is not worth giving these hobbies up.
Of course, if I could not make the bills I would get a perdiem job, but unless that happens :o , my off time is the most important thing to me. :)

It would have to be a heck of a good raise to make me spend less time with the ponies. I get annoyed when I have to just stay an extra 30 minutes past when Im scheduled to get off. My time is my time. I already dont have enough hours in the day.

You are so not alone DQ!!!!!

I took a demotion and hefty pay cut when I changed jobs - wanted out of the management positions and back to the worker-bee mode. makes me be a bit more frugal - but that's ok!
I also deliberately do not have a computer at home - I work on them all day and do not want to take work home or work from home. My time is just as valuable as their time - more so to me.

I wouldn't trade it. I work so I can ride. If I can't ride, then working becomes a chore.

Since I finally found my DREAM JOB...my job IS horses, now.

I walk to work, ride a bunch, and holler "whoa" alot during lessons. First barn job I've ever had where I feel like I just live on the farm and hang out at the barn all day.

What was I EVER thinking...working at some big company... :psycho:

8 years in the military and a college degree...and I end right back where I started!

HORSES!! I suffer through my job so that I can have afternoons/summers with the horses.
I'm with OpticalIllusion--I have a faculty meeting this afternoon and I'm pissed that I won't get out at 3:30 and have to stay until 4:30.

Hear Hear

Of course I work at the barn. My horse's stall is right beside the only window into the arena and stands and watches me teach. I go and visit him through the window when he is being particularly cute :cloud9: And I'm lucky enough to have the summers off. Drag that the income goes down right about show season but what cha goin to do :innocent:

Horses win. I quit my good-paying job and moved to the country, so horses win for sure. I work part time now (although get paid very well, relatively speaking), and I was pissed at work today when I left 5 minutes late. "The horses are hungry!!! I must get home!!!"

Like MissBri, I have been a manager but am now a worker-bee and enjoy it so much more. Managing people sucks big time and I don't ever want to do it again.

You may be able to make more money, but you cannot buy more time.

Mr. gunnar is semi retired with no retirement income so I am a slave to my job! Being a Tax person I work lots of Saturdays and boy do I hate it! I cannot ride on Saturdays if I work but most times i have no choice! :brickwall:

I pay more for my horses than any expense in our lives. My problem is how to afford horses when I retire! :brickwall:

But in the end life is too short to worry about these things!

DQ you will make the right decision in the end!

I had to decide this a few months ago, too...I could always use more money for the horses, but without the time, I am not sure it is worth it.

There was a presentation passed around that put me on a level one up from where I am. I have the same responsibilities and accountabilities as those mentioned in the presentation. I am just one salary grade lower. I was about to go to my boss and point this out. She stays every night past 7 PM. I just thought, it is not worth it. It probably would just all come out in taxes any way.

I have a great schedule, so neither work nor my Phatboy suffers! :P Now, my SO sometimes does not get as much attention, but he, luckily, has his own interests that he does while I am doing the horsie thing.

My job offers a lot of flexibility in that I can work anywhere from 2 days a week to 6 days a week. I used to work the bare minimum, but ever since Mr. T was laid off from the stupid Weather Channel and had his mid-life crisis-I-mean-career change, I've been working roughly 3 times the hours I used to. My riding time has really suffered, which makes me really cranky, but there is light way down the tunnel somewhere, and it should get better financially for us within the next 2-3 years :luck: :luck: :luck:

I can't wait!
