My boyfriend is allergic to cats.. and I have 4 :teehee:
He's also allergic to grass, I think some dogs, and just lots of other things. I don't think he's ever been tested to see what he's allergic to specifically though.

Anyway. We've been dating for 3yrs., and he has built up some tolerance to the cats. However, there are some times during the month that he gets all stuffed up, itchy eyes, and the scariest symptom is that sometimes he says it feels like his throat is closing up (this happens once every 2 months or so). When that happens, he has used my inhaler, and it works great.

He's on I *think* ClarinexD, it may be Allegra D, but I'm not positive. He's tried a few different meds., and they all seem to work great for a few months, then it seems like they just stop working as well. He definitely needs something with a decongestant, because that's his main symptom, along with itchy eyes.

I have an Alen 350 air purifier, link.
It seems to work quite well, but considering there's 4 cats that frequent my room (it's their hangout area), it's probably working overtime.

So does anyone have any suggestions for good meds. to take? OTC is fine.
Anything else I can do to help him out? I know some are going to say to keep the kitties out of my room.. but.. :sigh: I don't know if I can do that!

Try to vacuum lots before he comes over. My SO is allergic to cats and we try to vacuum every day. It has really helped. Also if your cats sleeps on the bed, change your sheets often. If your cats will allow it, give them regular bathes.

My mom is allergic to everything and she just takes allergy medicine every morning before leaving the house. Eery single day, no matter what, for as long as I can remember. She has no problems getting through the day, and she gives lessons so she is around the horses and outside all day.

Ditto the vacuuming. I'm also allergic to cats and we have four. And Mr. Fishy is allergic to dogs and we have three. We got a Roomba that vacuums the main living areas every day and it seems to help with the symptoms. Mr. Fishy also uses this odd sponge thing to wipe down the bed and my pillows before we go to bed. For some reason, the LONG HAIRED cat thinks that MY pillow is the best place for her to nap. :pissed: :sigh: :nyah:

If your boyfriend says it "feels like his throat is closing up", you need him to see a doctor. You may need to have an epi pen on hand. This is a classic sign of anaphylactic shock. :o Better safe than sorry.

Well, see, he's uh.. a bit dramatic.. so I'm not sure if it REALLY feels that way.

BUT, I do keep telling him he needs to go see his Dr.! I have no clue why he doesn't just make an appt. and go, makes me want to rip my hair out :brickwall:

I do vacuum twice a week, but can up that to more often. I really want to get one of those Roomba things, they sound neat!
