PACZKI, why is it spelled like that and pronounced poonchkey?? They are gross, but then I hate donuts. Thank god theres something I hate. When I was working at the hospital they have them in the cafeteria, looks too gross for words.
I guess its so you can fatten up before giving up something for lent! You can tell I am not a practicing catholic anymore. But isn't it right before lent?? Like tomorrow is Ash Wed.?? I cant remember!
Apparently it is polish in Origin~

Here in the land of the Pennsylvania Dutch, it's fasnachts.

Here's the recipe:

Get a big bowl.

Toss in a bunch of lard.

Toss in a bunch of sugar.

Blend with enough flour to hold together.

Fry in lard until they float.

Toss in powdered or regular sugar while hot.

Eat until you feel like you will sink. Which takes about one.

I have never heard of this animal???? Should I go try to make some now???

At the Masters, when they have the Holland* food pavilion, they often have something that looks or sounds like "poffer-ties" of something. The line up was too long so I didn't end up getting any.. of them... do you think it could be the samething? They appeared to be fried dough lumps, I think.

* I think. On a cold Masters (they usually all are), and this one was VERY cold, you usually don't notice which pavillion you're at, as you're usually too busy running around on hot tips (usually false) on which pavillion actually still has coffee.

The history behind them is because we are entering Lent, you use up all your lard, butter and sugar on Shrove Tuesday. All the stuff that's forbidden during Lent.

If you aren't Amish, YMMV.

Exactly - and then here they add filling:

cherry pie filling
lemon cream
banana cream
blueberry

basically more sugar.

DEEELISH

and prolly 950 calories per.

Wait, so is it good, or too sugary and makes you feel sick? I usually end up eating too much of that sort of thing and get a sugar high. ;)

I must confess I did go out of my way today to have some junk food and an extra-big latte before Lent begins. :innocent: I can't quite make myself give up coffee (hubby doesn't want me to anyway, I'd be too crabby  ), but I can live without lattes and fast food.

Oh the fun on Mardi Gras of being the Jew at an Episcopal School...I ask each student what they are giving up and then they ask me...

But I think I'll give up soda anyway, it's good for me to suffer a little ;)

What language are y'all speaking?

I'm only familiar with King Cake, which is no longer delivered to our home office in PA since our hospitals were demolished in NOLA. I have a collection of baby Jesuses from years of King Cake.

mmmm, King Cake from Gambinos...

but alas. Paczki is really popular here as I live in a very Polish area and my family is polish, but i could never really get into it. It's sort of like a jelly donut, but more sugar and worse for you.

Poffertjes are little Dutch pancakes, delicious!
The Dutch word for pancake though is really Pannekoeken, pronounced Panokaken. Growing up, that was the only word I ever heard for pancake in my house.

Around here we have hot cross buns - but they are good.....

I used to toally fast on Weds and Fridays during lent - now I modify it - fast on Ash Weds and Good Friday, practice the 'modified' fasting on other Fridays - the modified fast allows you one meal - sorry, but that is not fasting to me........

I am only a semi-practicing Catholic these days...

I feel it is more important to 'be a good soul' than to sit in a pew.

Lend a helping hand, smile as much as you can, count your blessings rather than your miseries, and enjoy each day - it is a present.....

I saw on the news last night an eating contest with one of the above, lard based, treats. The winner ate 13 (or was it 33?) in 5 minutes.

I assume, from the posts above with the ingredients, he followed up with several Vytorin for dessert. Blocked carotids, anyone? :spew:
