The Grand Canyon is definitely happening. The bf keeps threatening a deathmarch down to the bottom. This was after making the mistake of telling me it was one of the most intensive hikes he ever took... I want to ride the burros. Or feed them. Whichever!

The hike DOWN isn't so bad. It's going back up that sucks.

Oh - and check out this site: http://www.roadtripusa.com/

You gotta take Route 66 at some point!

Amtrak from the Northeast to the southwest is fabulous.

Look into car transport. I did this. It's great if you can get a not too big vehicle. http://www.autodriveaway.com/
You will have to fly home, or use Amtrak, Be aware a round trip flight is usually cheaper than one way (you don't have to use the 2nd leg).

Some of my favorite places in the USA:
Sedona.
Go swim the the Salt Lake (try to swim :teehee: ).
Cheyenne.
Pryor Mountains, Wyoming. Lovell. As a horse lover, it can be a spiritual experience (was for me).
Winnemucca, Nevada - mule races
Rachel, Nevada :teehee:
Lake Tahoe is gorgeous.
Independence Pass, CO
Leadville, CO (check out Boom Days!! and the burro packing races - I tried it :jaw: ) The mines are so cool (literally). There's a ghosttown too, but I forget the name.
Zion National Park
The Arches are fantastic/Moab.
Yellowstone, but the tourists will kill you.
The entire Grand Canyon is amazing. Go rafting! You will wet your pants :jaw: ;)

I have more, but this is what I can think of quickly.

OMT I went to Gatlinburg in 2006. The Smoky Mountains National Park is beautiful, Gatlinburg itself was a total tourist trap town. I don't live far from Solvang and it reminded me of that, without all the Danish stuff.

There are so many great places to see, it's hard to think of them all. The drive from Grand Lake, CO to Estes Park is great, and both towns are cute.

Idaho--I remember going to Couer D'Alene (my spelling is off, I think) and it was pretty nice. Northern CA---Tahoe is a must, my favorite place in the world. Stay on the north or west side.

I'm a notorious tourist trap lover, so don't let that deter you from telling me places that are filled with that kind of crap. On spring break a few years ago we went to Catalina Island and I was overjoyed at the stores when you get off the boat. I mean, I loved camping there and the hiking but how can you go wrong shopping at the House of Wood (which, oddly, was filled with stuff made of seashells...)? I find the greatest weird gifts at those kind of places..

Have you seen Mt. rushmore? It is worth the visit and the crowds. The Black hills of SD are wonderful!! We camped at Teddy Roosevelt National Park in the ND Badlands! It was great!

How about Graceland? I loved it!

Watch the temps anywhere you go that time of year! I love the Southwest, with Capital Reef NP being my favorite spot but in August it will be oh so hot!

Do not forget the Puget Sound in Washington. Wonderful, wonderful and not hot!

The Oregon coast is breath taking and wonderful, with lots of nice camping. Lots of Yurts too!

You will have to think long and hard about your route that time of year!

You need to check out Oatman, AZ on Route 66. The wild burros are amazing. They wander through town and do whatever they feel like doing.

The link below has video of some burros.

Thelwell, this brings back memories for me. We did a similar trip just after hubby got called to the bar. Way back when (30 years agoish). We drove across Canada, stayed on Vancouver Island for a week and then came back through the US, spending a week camping in Yellowstone and checking out Mt Rushmore along the way. It was a fabulous time, one we will never forget.

Wish I had TOC back then for suggestions :one: WOW

Have a great time.

Hubby and I did a trip from LA to NY about 12 years ago it was a blast. We had no particular schedule or destination except to be in Kentucky for the Derby. We checked out the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, Churchill Downs, Graceland, The Grand Ole Opry. There were so many places that we stopped, that I don't even remember them all.

Pick up a copy of a book called Road Food. It has all the great, but wierd places to eat. We had a blast with that. My favorite was a pie place in Arkansas. The woman had 15 different old kitchen stoves of every color and brand plugged in all over the place in a garage. It was the funniest and least professional looking place ever, but the pie was amazing.

We also got a total kick out of a sandwich place we went to in Oklahoma. You kind of had to be there, but I'll tell the story anyway. My husband ran in and ordered two turkey sandwiches and went back outside to help me with something. He went back in to get the sandwiches and came out laughing so hard that tears were running down his face. The sandwich was two slices of white bread with a slice of round turkey in the middle served in a little zip lock sandwich bag. It looked like the kind of sandwich your mom would make for your lunch when you were 5. We were expecting a typical east coast deli sandwich: tons of turkey, lettuce and tomato on a huge hard roll. We never laughed so hard. We still talk about that stupid sandwich to this day.

I highly reccomend Carlsbad Caverns, stay for the bat release it is amazing! There is also plenty of camping nearby. Also in New Mexico is Silverton, where you take a train to Durango. You end up in this amazing little old style western town, so much fun!

zbar, baby, sugar, sweet cheeks! They don't "release" the bats :teehee: They're the "self releasing" wild types that fend for themselves. I know you know this, but your sentence made me giggle!

Also my toes bade me to tell you that hiking the Grand Canyon in a day is ill advised! It took me ALL day to hike down half way (and back up). It's very deceiving standing on the rim looking down at the trail. Then again I brought no water or food with me. Hey I was young and foolish, what can I say. It cost me a whole day of sleep to recover and three toenails!!! I'd say I was damn lucky. it could have been MUCH worse!

I agree with everyone who says "down isn't so bad. it's back UP that sucks!!!". On the way down I was friendly and cheerful and said "hi!!" to everyone coming UP that I passed. Couldn't figure out why no one really answered me. They're all struggling to make it back to the top and it's HARD. Some chick was munching fig newtons on the way up in front of me, and I swear I nearly tackled her and took her out for want of a cookie! I would have sold my first-born child into slavery for a ride back up on a mule!!
