I have a cold. It started as a sore throat a few days ago and now I cannot hear out of my left ear. The ear-pluggedness started yesterday and all day today it has been bothering me. I cannot clear it no matter what I do - plug my nose and blow, yawn, chew, wiggle my jaws...nothing helps.

Any suggestions? I'm desperate and may go buy some colloidal silver and end up like the Blue Guy!!!

Fishy, take it from someone with a permanent vestibular condition; get thee to a doctor and get it seen! Ear infections can lead to a range of problems that at best can be uncomfortable and at worse can damage your hearing and balance.

They're not sure where my problem came from, but it might have been an untreated infection. :( I did have serious congestion prior to the dizzies.

Yep - the doc is the way to go!

And maybe a hot shower and let it rain in your ear - that sometimes helps me.

Take benedryl as directed on the package, and gargle with salt / soda (about 1/2 teaspoon of each in an 8 oz glass of very warm water) every hour or so. Continue to take benedryl for a few days after the cold goes away, or for as long as your ear feels plugged.

I always get plugged ears when I get a cold, and this is what really works for me. Got this info from an advice nurse at Kaiser Permanente, so it came with some medical knowledge...

Good luck!

Agree with the others--get thee to a doctor. The fact that you can't clear it and that it's accompanied with a sore throat might mean something more serious is going on.

1. Go to the doctor.
2. Take ibruprofin or similar.
3. In the meantime, speaking from *years* of earaches/ear infections, grab a hair dryer, set on low, and blow dry the inside of your ear. Not only does it eliminate any pain, but it may also unplug it.

Really?

I gotta try that next time!

Go the the doctor...it could be a nasty sinus infection.

This is probably horrible, terrible advice, but I hold my nose closed and blow...hard. That sometimes pops them. Again, I doubt this is a good idea, when you're in pain, is blowing an eardrum really that much worse? :innocent:

I have to say I have had ears plugged once in a blue moon, but always with a particularly bad cold. its awful. DONT try to plug your nose and blow, it forces air down the ear tubes, can make it worse. I have done the hair dryer trick. Mine would just all of a sudden pop and OMT what a relief. I myself would not go to the doc unless it does not clear in a day or two. Can you call the nurse at your docs office to talk? sometimes that is a good way to see if they think it needs seeing or they might give you an idea!
Sorry you are sick fishy, sending ear popping jingles your way!

Well I did some reading online and came upon a dive chatroom and everyone there was talking about taking Sudafed, so I did. It made a huge difference (that, plus bending over and tilting my head to the side, go figure). My ears are clear for the moment - I hope it lasts! If not, I will try the hair dryer thing - sounds interesting!

You might also try having your ears candled. Talk to your health food store about ear candles. It sounds kind of freaky at first, but I've done it and it tends to help.

Fish Cheeks, I'm glad your ears feel better. I am late to this thread, but was going to recommend Sudafed as well. I can't take too much or it makes me jittery, but for plugged ears or sinuses it works like a charm for me.
