As some of you know, I’ve been considering a half lease on Tally. The financial help would be nice, but even better would be the shared riding so she stays fit. So I run an ad. A girl contacts me and she seems like a good fit. I give her the terms of the lease.

Now for the rest of the story.

She was 20 minutes late, but she tries Tally and actually rode her very well. I’m pleased. I’m thinking this will be a good fit.
Next thing out of her mouth is talking about how she’s the sole bread winner while her husband finishes school. And how she’s starting grad school. WARNING WILL ROBINSON is all I can think.
We go back to the barn. She puts Tally in the wash/grooming stall and hands the reins to me. So I figure I’d just watch and see. I strip the horse. I groom the horse. I blanket the horse. I clean the tack. All while she watches.

She leaves and says she has to talk it over with her husband. I figure that’s the last I’d ever hear from her.

I get an email. She makes a lowball offer on the lease terms based on: She only wants to ride twice a week for now. She won’t be showing or taking the horse off the property. I’m supposed to take pity on her financial situation. The horse is barefoot. (what in Tom’s name does THAT have to do with anything). She knows what I pay for board.

So by the time I’m finished reading her email, I’m royally pissed. But I kept my head, told her that the terms I offered were actually lower than what I initially wanted and that I’d keep my ears open for something more suited to her financial situation.

So my question: WHY THE :censored: DID SHE WASTE MY TIME? She knew up front what the terms were. :argh: :argh: :argh: :argh: :argh:

That sucks, and she royally took advantage of you. What a bummer. I know how you feel. Half leasing can be tough. There's the sort of "impression" that because it's only half the time, that's not worth much. Exactly the opposite is true-- when I half lease a horse it usually means I let the other person jump and I don't jump at ALL (to keep wear and tear minimal on the horse). So they might only be getting 3/6 days-- but they are getting the "better" rides. Not to mention wear and tear on tack, and the overall hassle and time management necessary to coordinate with another person. All of that is WORTH something. Your time is WORTH something. I'm sorry! :brickwall:

Thank you for getting that it's not just about the money.

And seriously - where can you half lease a nice horse for $150 a month - which is what she wanted to pay.

Oddly, though, if she had even offered to groom after she rode, I may have been a little willing to work with her. But that was such a turn off...

I can't believe she didn't untack and take care of things after she rode. That is soooo wrong. If someone did that with my horse, I would just flat be done with it and tell them to be on their way while I finished taking care of my horse.

If you're leasing someone else's horse, it's a major RULE that you take even better care of it than the owner would his/herself....not to mention leave the tack and equipment cleaner than you found it.

So, be happy. You dodged a bullet, and avoided what could have been much, much worse.

Yikes, be thankful she isn't leasing your horse! Doesn't sound like the kind of person that would be a good fit for either you or the pony.

I tried to sell my gelding last year, then tried to lease him out. Both were a total nightmare. All kinds of crazy tire-kickers. Selling is hard, leasing out is even harder I think because you have to deal with the new person and how they care for/ride your horse on a regular basis.

Anyway good luck with trying to lease.... there are plenty of crazies, but some good people out there too who might be perfect for Tally! Hang in there! :)

MGP--sorry she was a dud. I was trying to find half leasors for Moses recently and faced similar things only they didn't want to pay at all AND didn't have the skills so that they would be helping him...rather my rides would be "fixing" their rides. Soooo many tire kickers out there and people who want something for nothing. Sorry

Oooohhh I commiserate!!! You wouldn't **believe** the crap I went through when I sold Rosie. I didn't post much of it. Like the lady who loved her and wanted to trade straight across for her recently gelded, unbroke 8 yr old who bucked and "jumped around" and had never gone over a walk and who she was terrified of.
And others, many others- I agree, why bother if you can't even closely afford it?!

And act like a snob while you're at it.. :mallet: I had one lady (loose term) hop off Rosie and leave her standing in the middle of the arena. It was nearly comical. Rosie looked at me, like, "What now? This is new" and just kept standing till I came caught her. Umm.. "here groom..." nahhhhh more like "Here Mexican, take this horse. I shouldn't have to TELL you......" :mallet:

You'll probably go through a lot more loonies till the right one shows up- and s/he will! :)

I'm in the same boat with selling mine! Luckily I found a lesson barn with experience with senior horses who would be willing to trade my gelding (I am very lucky he is so awesome to do this) for a broodmare who I have a lot of experience with her parents. Plus both parents are still alive and local and even though she doesn't have papers I can get her DNA typed and registered with the registry both of her parents were approved for.
Small price to pay for a mare who will help market your stallion! Unfortunately though I am getting a broodmare I need, I am not selling the horse I want to pay the bills I have! But I really feel your pain. I am at a point in my grumpy pregnancy if the person is wasting my time there is no set amount of tolerance I will have or what will come out of my mouth once that amount is passed. Had a cowboy come out to try and ride one of my horses and he was a talker. I had to shout out, "Shut up and ride you are :censored: my horse!!!"
So he stopped making fun of the english riding position after I made him get off and hopped on myself. Then he rode and was like, "Oh crap, you were right!"

I"m w/ Merc, you dodged a bullet. Not only w/ the cheapness and low ball offer, but your horse (and you) deserve someone who LOVES the whole horse experience, not just riding.

Just think, she could'a come up w/ the money, it wouldn't have worked out because she's got the wrong idea on a lot of things, and then you'd have to get rid of her. That would be worse, IMO.

Someone great will come along...wish you were closer. There are a couple great kids who are looking for something decent to ride and show around here.....JEN

LOL - I was actually thinking ahead of time...I wonder if I should charge for the ride and reimburse her if it works out.

Hindsight....

I have been SUPER lucky with all of the half-leases that I've ever had, though they have always been found/encouraged by the trainer at the barn. I've had both super kids/families and super adults as leasors and I think that I've been pretty fair. I too give up the good rides, my leasee's get to jump weekly while I jump once or twice a month. I ask for 1/2 of board only, i take care of vet, trims/shoes, etc.

Like I said, I've been VERY LUCKY (Lion1204 was a great half-leasor) and hope to continue to find good people as I can't get out to ride as much as my guy requires. It's really a win/win situation if you can find the right person.

Aw, thanks Jen. :) You had an incredible mare and I was a poor college student who knew just how darn lucky I was!!! I actually got to lease 3 very nice horses at your barn and boy are things cheaper in Central PA than in Chester County!!! I miss my $10 private lessons with Sharon! haha.

MGP - I'm sorry it didn't work out. As a professional half leaser  - I can't imagine trying to "barter" with someone on the price. Maybe I've just been lucky and always had fair people to work with, but the price is the price. It's not like you get to barter on the board!!!

The right person is out there. And you know what? I bet for the right person who would care for Tally like she was their own, you'd even be willing to compromise on the price. This "lady" was definitely NOT IT!

I always try to go above and beyond for an owner. Maybe sometimes I go overboard with the communication (in college I would have a notebook where I'd write down what we did/worked on and more recently, I would email the owner), but I'd sure rather they knew what I was doing than wonder what the heck I did with their horse!
