Form over a fence can be caused by conformation and/or by being green. If your horse does not know how to jump, sometimes a small jump placed while working in a round pen can help them figure out where their feet are and how to collect themselves to jump properly. If he knows where his feet are and how to get himself off the ground, but he is still not tucking his front end properly, gymnastics will help rock him back on his hocks and jump up properly, but even gymnastics will not make a poor jumper a good jumper. Do you have a trainer who can help? Have you seen someone else ride the horse to see exactly how he is jumping? Could it just be that he is so big that he does not have to make an effort yet over the size fences you are jumping? Maybe he is just stepping over them because he can. Give him more time with the flat work and then re-introduce jumping in the late Spring and see if that helps! |
