Ok. I am in big trouble here. I don't "do" the QH thing, although I own one.

My mother has decided that the one thing she wants to do this year is attend the Williamston QH All-Novice Show in Feb 2008.

She wants me to help, and wants to use my horse (hers is a foundation bred QH, and although lovely, the last time she went apparently folks made fun of her for having a ranch type horse..... really, they made her cry. )

I am going to go with her and want to prep my horse for her so that he will be the best he can be (mind you, he is not the "new" QH type, but is more of a huntery type, not waspy, but well built... I like him anyway).

HELP ME PLEASE.

Get me a plan... what does she need to wear, what does my horse need to practice, she will only be flatting, not jumping. And probably primarily doing english (I am not sure if my horse can "do" western anymore, he used to be a roping horse though...). There is a picture of my horse in my profile.

My horse, I know will need to be braided. I am not going to do it, it takes me hours, it never looks good, and so my gift to my mom will be a braider.... anyone know of one that will already be there?

Oh, and did I mention... HELP!

We aren't expecting to win, but I want this to be a POSITIVE experience for my mom, be prepared, and make her proud. I posted this on the TOB too, so hoping for lots of input!!!

I am hoping through posting on a bunch of boards that maybe I can find a trainer or someone to team up with when we get there (willing to pay training fees of course).....

Bless you for trying to help your mom! I don't know anyone who is going, but as far as appearance, attire, etc, just borrow a recent copy of the Quarter Horse Journal, or whatever the AQHA magazine is, and try to look like the people in the pictures. Good luck!

You could try getting in touch with Jessica Rhymer. I'm not sure where she is training right now but she always goes to those shows. Maybe ask around on the NC horse BB's.

It has been a LONG time... and I showed APHA not AQHA. But this is what was popular in terms of turnout/way of going for APHA HUS horses...

Every rider had either a navy or hunter green jacket. Yes, I realize on the A circuit those are not the in colors, but back then that is ALL people were wearing. Gray with windowpane would REALLY stick out.

Helmets were the unapproved kind (I don't know if the rules have changed, it's been quite a few years). The really thin brain bucket kind with detachable harnesses. Check the rules, they may have done something about unapproveds-- but back then it was the style.

Shirts were ALL WHITE. No colors. Not even pale colors. White. Maybe off white or white tone on tone stripe but no colors.

Breeches- either puke green or tan. Mostly Tailored Sportman or similar.

Saddle pads were either fitted white fluffies or the kind with spaces for numbers (HATE THEM) not half pads. Saddles were more plain and flat than on the A circuit, but there was a range. Bridlework usually a bit plainer than on the A circuit, less fancy stitching. LONG reins (because of the HUS headset which is not as collected and up as open shows).

Black hoof polish, even on chesnut hooves (HATE IT). Lots of hair removal on the face. Perfectly spic and span turnout. Say what you want about breed people, one thing they know is how to groom and TURNOUT. Not a hair out of place. Minimal vaseline or other shiny goo on the face to highlight eyes.

Horses go long and low. No, really... LOW. They are flat flat movers like regular hunters but unlike open hunters there is no push ahead behind in the rear end. So the horses move flat but don't move out and move more underneath themselves. No passing on the rail. No circling. You take your place and keep it no matter what else happens. Go slow and don't get in a position to have to pass anyone. Much less contact with the bit than what you might be used to. Horse has to carry himself without help.

That's what I remember. But it's been a while. Feel free to chuck any advice if someone more currently showing AQHA disagree.

And tell your mom to "bless your heart" to ANYONE who laughs at her. How evil!

I replied on your thread on the TOB also...AQHA shows in general have a ton of novice classes, as well as they break up most of all the divisions by age and experience, so if she doesn't want to show against pros and such, she doesn't have to..

Have fun!!

My mom and I show AQHA when we have time. Its actually pretty relaxed normally.

As far as horse traveling, for hunters you really want them to step up and show off their stride at the trot, and have a nice quiet collected canter. Downward transitions need to be perfect. Horse should travel on a loose rein in a snaffle. Horse poll should never go below its withers, but she be level and steady.

You can use a standard shaped white pad, or a white pad with the number slots in it. Those are very popular for aqha. Leather girth.

Clothing wise, white show shirt or a very light color. Hunt coats are normally navy or green though you could probably use any color really. Gloves of course. Hair behind the ears, no hunter hair. Nicely pulled back, you can use a show bow if you prefer. Polished tall boots and breeches.

If she does the hunter hack, its usually two very non scary jumps. The last show we did was two single poles between post standards 4 strides apart.

Hope this helps.

Have fun!

oh I forgot... TAILS. If your horse doesn't have a nice one naturally, then a fake. And the fakes are a bit different in the way they tie in and hang... sort of heavier/fuller. I don't remember there being anyone in HUS with a straggly tailed horse. Either real or fake, everyone was wearing a full tail.

I think maybe I have convinced her to hold off on this show, and link up with a QH trainer!

Ironically enough, we do have a fake tail, for her QH when he had some pictures done. His tail is normally awful :)

I have put her in touch with Laura, and hopefully she can find someone to work with on a regular basis closer by....
