Well, the vet was here but it still isn't good. She's on stall rest for a month, and then we'll see. If she's not better in two, she's done. :,(

My gut says that she's not going to come back...even if she can come back and be sound, I don't think she'll hold up for the work we've been doing and we won't ask her to do it. The clincher was when her owner (my coach) said she had an idea for a new lease for me. :o

damn damn damn

*sigh* I can make you all feel better about your boarding costs. My horse lives at a very nice barn, but it's $2000 per month. It is full service (not optional there) BUT ... get this... "They can no longer accomodate my need to ride after work (6 pm)... all riding must be done by noon." So basically I am now paying out the ying yang and getting to ride twice a week, on the weekends. No, I'm not staying. But since this rule went into effect with no warning, I have to deal with it through the notice period. :brickwall:

The good news is that I found a newish barn that just opened up and has no problem with working adults, thank god. And the board there is "only" $1250. God, I hate living in the northeast.

Anyway, back to the OP's question:

Even where I am, I can buy Adequan for around $37 a dose (through Allivet.com) ... so that shouldn't break the bank. Legend is more expensive and winds up being close to $100 because I don't do IV shots unless absolutely necessary, so it involves a farm call. But I only do that for shows. You may find a combination of Adequan and possibly an oral joint supplement makes a world of difference without adding too significantly to the budget. In your shoes, I would continue leasing and working toward home ownership. It does sound like you basically have a full lease at only around half the cost, and on a horse you like and get along with, that is a great situation, particularly if the horse is an upper level schoolmaster type. Those are the ones you REALLY learn to ride on.

Good luck!

Considering their policy change has completely affected your ability to ride your horse-- you should totally not be paying for the notice period. That is crap and you should fight it.

WHOA $2000 a month and they want you to ride by NOON?? Are they kidding?!

I'm lucky where I am in many ways. The horse scene here is pretty bizarre at times, a lack of good training and instruction, and plenty of local drama, but horse keeping can be pretty cheap here compared to other parts of the NE.

To the OP, so sorry about the mare.... :( and good luck with the new lease!!

The owner and I had a talk... the mare's riding career is over, at least for the moment. It's going to take months for her to come back, if she even does at all.

The good news...? Because the mare is approved/proven broodmare, they're considering breeding her one last time. Buying a baby would be a BAD idea, wouldn't it??

So sorry to hear that it worked out for the worst. I hope the ex-Prelim guy you mentioned as a possible new mount works out. :luck:

Yes buying a baby would be BAAD if your pocketbook doesn't like leasing :P
But I'm glad the mare will have some future. As for you, as much as you did like her, that's the GOOD thing about a lease. You can pick up and move on.

Ah - my main debate was about sinking money into someone else's horse instead of my own. Money wise I could do a baby.

Skills and ability wise, bad bad BAD idea.

The stallion the owner is looking at combines her favourite bloodlines, would be an outstanding match for the mare, and I think would probably be for herself. Or be one very, very expensive dressage baby...

Well if money isn't the issue...and you have patience...and someone to send the baby to while it grows up...and a good person to start it...and...and...and :innocent:

Sorry to hear about the mare. It looks like the decision was made for you and now you can be free of worry about that situation. A door has opened for something else to come into your life now! (like a new foal? no, no, just kidding...really)

As j4j mentioned, my coach has a line on an ex-prelim packer. I'm a weenie eventer at heart who will likely settle into dressage in a few years, so IF (fingers crossed, knocking on wood etc) it works out it may be a good way to do some more jumping before I decide I'm too chicken.

And by then I'd be ready to take on a young horse out of my favourite mare, right? :innocent:
