Is the meadow on fire?

Yes, I am fully aware that $150-$250 is a normal rate for a half lease. For a NORMAL horse. PSG Schoolmaster is not equal to "normal horse". PSG Schoolmaster = horse that folks would line up out the door to lease at any price. I also bothered to look up Ibex's annual costs, which I remembered her volunteering on one of those "financial reckoning" threads on TOB just a few weeks ago. She reported $6600 annually on the lease, which included her cost for lessons. That's $550 a month. NOW would anyone care to heckle me about Ibex putting out only a little less than the cost of ownership per month? I am getting the Steal of the Year on board, training, and shoes, but even so, I'm only putting out $538 monthly to own my horse and take one lesson a week from a great eventing trainer (make that $678 if I moved to two weekly lessons). I realize that other areas can be much more expensive (I grew up in Virginia so trust me, I know), and that not every horse is a young easy keeper. But nonetheless, once you're talking about $550 + $50 more for maintenance, you're getting into that "might as well just own something" territory. That said, Ibex has already made clear that buying isn't a great option for her schedule right now, so unless there's good-quality free riding or a cheaper lease nearby, I think she's stuck. Not that it's bad to be stuck with a PSG schoolmaster who can teach you loads and loads. |

Um, ouch. You're getting sensitive because you have information from another thread on another board? I don't read much on COTH anymore...rarely visit anything but the H/J board, I didn't have the information you seem to have had. Yes, I made some assumptions. I'll make some more. I'll assume that if a lease is costing around $6600/year for Ibex...that owning, in her area would cost at least 2x as much. Just because her current costs approximate the full cost of owning in your area, which sound lower than average, doesn't mean it would compare. I, like Ibex, live in an area where $10k gets you a 3 or 4 year old with some flat work, a bit o/f or maybe a BN level AGED (15+) packer. $6500-7000k is a doable budget if your looking really green or happen across a diamond in the rough. I wish Ibex all the best, but she's really got a good thing going, IMO. Yes, I would want the maintenance stipend clarified, since she already thought she was paying for things like Adequan. But I do think a half lease should be a half lease. You pay half the costs. And as previous noted, Ibex is really the only one putting the wear and tear on this horse. Seems like it's pretty fair to ask for the half of adequan. |

I know. It's really not at all a bad place to be stuck. I think the news may have just hit me on a really bad week already... plus there's been a LOT of drama around the barn late, coach is already a bit edgy (I'd have been a screaming lunatic by now with the crap she's been dealing with). And then to top it off the damn mare kicked me the same day and my leg is purple. |

Wow, I don't know what rock I was under but I am sure that must have been a hard decision for you to come to. Having a horse is hard. It is emotionally and financially draining for anyone but those who live off a trust fund or who have married well. Leasing is a good way to get your feet wet, but doesn't come close to the stress, expense and responsibility of owning. Lately for me, with the severe downturn in the economy and the effect it is having on us brings that fact home even more. It's kinda like living with someone vs being married. It "looks" the same but just doesn't really compare in many ways. Best of luck RugBug. |

Heh...no rock...it's still not completely common knowledge. And the decision has taken awhile to be cemented. I've been playing with it since the beginning of November or so. 'Course Show has been fantastic since then...really great and I'm looking forward to showing him next year, so who knows what will happen. Besides, the horse market sucks right now. And I'm askeered of looking for a new one and what issues it may bring with it. Blech. Too bad I'm a limited rider with a moral compass. Being a better rider would solve the problem...or just drugging the sucker. Too bad either is not a realistic option in my book. (I try at the riding part, but there's only so much you can do. ) |

The decision may be out of my hands, but we're in "wait and see" mode. Mare came up lame in front a few days ago. Gave her a couple of days off, looked like an abcess, farrier was out to look, mare was SOUND. Of course. Today she comes out of her stall warm and a bit puffy, so we put her on the lunge line. She's now very, very lame. Coach/Owner starts looking for the problem, finds the heat that could either be: a) nothing major, possibly related to having her angles adjusted, and a few days off will solve the problem, and timing isn't bad since I'm out of town for a week anyways. or, b) it's a suspensory issue. The look on Coach/Owners face makes me think that "a" is a long shot. She's giving it a couple of days to see if it improves at all and then will call the vet. The mare is 19. This isn't good. I feel like such a toad for debating if the Adequan or Legend would be "worth it." Do we do jingles on this board? |

The same - lovely and sound at the walk (she's a dressage horse who gets 8s on her freewalk). Trot is horrifying. Heat and slight puffiness in the tendon.
