I have recently picked up a bad habit of driving with my legs, 2-3 strides away from the jump and that messes the distance up, i just got a new horse and are starting 3ft tomorow. In 1 week i will show at 3ft and am soooo nervous, help for hte nerves and the habit. Thanks |

For nervous, having a routine helps so you aren't rushed and don't sweat the small things, breathing exercises may work as well, visualization techniques, etc..there are a few books out there that help you with your mental game. As for driving with your leg, you need to find out why you have started this...do you feel like your horse is not being responsive? worried she will quit? Counting helps keep the same tempo, 1, 2, 1, 2, or 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, depending on what works for you, or singing a song with a similar tempo, so it keeps you quiet, waiting but supporting. If you aren't confident at home, it might be worthwhile to skip next week, keep doing your homework, and show later. Either way, good luck! |

Singing out loud keeps my legs quiet - pick a song of the tempo you want and belt it out. Makes you breathe and relax. |

I used to get too fidgety in front of fences too. Sometimes I still do if I get really nervous and revert back to my old habbits. I agree with the above posts, as far as the counting or singing....I'm a counter. I just go, "one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four...." pretty much the whole time. It even works at shows b/c I can count to myself through the WHOLE thing. I know you should technically count to say...six if you're doing a line with six strides...but I get too worried if I try that and just going to four works for me. Try it, just count out loud at home for a while. It works wonders. |

In addition to counting, which works great, I also would recommend doing some gymnastics where you can trot in and practice just sitting still through the whole thing. I tend to get too busy with my upper body a couple of strides before the jump and gymnastics really, really help me with that. Just get in two-point, look up, breath, and don't move. Just let the horse jump up underneath you. It will help your position + help you learn to trust your horse. |
