I know what I'm getting the trainer, barn manager, and primary groom for my horse, and I know that I'm giving cash to the handfull of other guys who work in the barn, but aren't primarily responsible for my horse....so the question is--how much money do other people give the barn help--the ones who feed, muck, turnout etc. but aren't the ones you deal with more intimately? The primary groom for my horse is worth his weight in gold to me and I want to differentiate between the guys who generally help the barn run like clockwork and the individual groom who keeps MY horse like clockwork. And I can't afford to give them all what I'm giving him, but want to be nice and gice them something. THoughts?

I give all the guys the same thing. The "behind the scene" guys are just as important to my horse's welfare as the main guys.

How much do you guys tip the farrier? The farrier's assistant? I bought them each chocolates and hot cocoa, but I also want to give them a Wawa giftcard. I'm tempted to give them both the same amount. Faux pas?! Farrierness-is-next-to-godliness, but is assistant-to-the-farrierness? I appreciate them both equally, but will it offend the farrier if I gave his assistant the same amount?

In this instance, I would disagree. This particular groom has been in the barn for more than ten years and travels to all the shows and individually and specifically takes care of my horse. He's the one who gets up at ungodly hours to prep my horse or stays up late to unprep my horse. He's the one who notices the bumps and if he blinks funny! He will get a 3 digit bonus. While the rest of the guys in the barn are wonderful and 2nd to none, they're more of regular hours guys...their jobs just aren't the same and to tip the one who takes care of my horse like his own child would be an ufront to his dedication and longstanding loyalty to the barn...but I'm not handing out thousands of dollars in Christmas money to the barn help so that it's all even. Hope this makes sense.

I typically give my farrier $100. I think a small present to the farrier's assistant is appropriate.

Although I love my blacksmith, I do not tip him.

This is my plan also...even though I have two farriers for two horses. The one who deals with Preston's clubby LF will also get a bottle of very good scotch....

I'm sure anything/amount/gift that you will give them will be appreciated.
I receive gifts from parents and kids, truly doesn't matter what it could be, just the idea that they thought of me is truly enough.
For a figure...
$10 = :) + <_< would would bring a smile on my face but perhaps a wee bit cheap.

$20 = :) +

$30 = :) + +

$40 = + :one: + :rose:

$50 and up = :cloud9: :cheer: :woot: :rose:

I do $ holiday bonus to all home and show grooms - same amount to each. The grooms that go to the shows already get $ tips at the shows, so I figure they're already getting more than the ones that don't ever groom/tack up, etc. my horse. It adds up, but they're well worth it! This is the first year in quite some time that I only have one there, but I'll probably still tip the same amount.

I figure I already pay my vet enough during the year. :P (plus, I pay before due)

My farrier has changed this year - wasn't planning on doing anything there. (same as above note) :)

I wait until my tree goes out on the street to tip garbage people. ;)

I leave a little something for my mail person, whom I never see.

I only get the Sunday paper - I still should probably tip, but don't.

If you're giving the head guy $100, i've give the others at least $25.

I'm at a big show barn too with amazing grooms, and while I don't have full grooming for my horse at home, I do at the the shows. The guys all work so, so, so hard. While they don't tack up my horse for me every ride, they are always helping me out my longing my horse, helping me adjust tack and the 1000 other things I ask them to do in a year. So, I try to give each of them a $20 gift card and a box of home made Christmas goodies (a huge hit last year). There are four of them so it can get a big spendy, but I like to do something for them. I'd go broke giving all of them $100.

We have to tip the farrier? Seriously?

you don't have to tip anyone, silly! I just tip mine because he's the best and i'd like to keep him happy :-) I can get him out to my backyard barn to fix my thrown shoes in 24-48 hours and that's worth a lot more than a yearly tip to me!

I see it as a necessary bribe for future performances.
