I for one am really excited to see this class take form! Does anyone think that any VA shows might adopt this class for '08? Anyone planning on showing there horse in this class? Do you think this class will be dominated by professionals?

I went to watch the one last June at Canterbury Farm in IL. While there were pros, there were also juniors & ao's plus some crossovers from jumper-land who thought the course just looked like too much fun to miss.

And to be honest--the course kind of evens the playing field. Sloping ground, natural jumps, galloping in a field--some of those horses or riders hadn't done anything like that before so there were a few special moments.

I'm so excited to hear about this kind of class coming back. I can't wait to watch one! I'm sure it's an interesting addition for everyone - horses, riders and spectators alike.

Jules, me too... we should try to catch one together when we know where more are going to be. I think the email from USHJA only had like 6 locations so far for '08 but more were most likely going to be added.

It's great to hear that Juniors, Amateurs & Pro's alike were competing in the class! I bet a lot of people from Fox Hunter land will probably compete in this class too!

Funny, I just read the USHJA email and came on here to see what y'all think about this, too. I'd love to see one! Can't wait 'til there is one around here. So far there are none in the Northeast. :(

Great that it is coming back. I would love to watch one or compete in one-it would be so much fun! :) I watched a video (old type saved to DVD) of Dave Kelly (from the 60s) riding in a 4'6" hunter class reminiscent of this class description on a beautiful grey horse. Awesome. I hope this takes off.

So I went to the Derby at the St Louis show and it was great!! It was actually exciting to watch hunters! :P There were 25 horses in the class- a mix of pros, ammies and some juniors. The jumps were beautiful and natural- there were two options in each round. There were few ground lines and lots of tight turns. They brought in a wood bank (they said it weighed 10,000 lbs)- there were quite a few refusals and some squirrelly behavior over it-- but it was nice to see the horses and the riders face a challenge-- definitely wasn't a boring ole hunter course! The bank was actually an option jump but the other choice was this weird airy square gate with no standards-- something the horses would wonder whether or not they were actually supposed to jump it! This jump also had a handful of refusals. The handy hunter round had a walk jump right at the in gate, also included the bank/ gate option and had some tight turns and option for an added jump. It really was fun to watch and it was so obvious that the riders were having a great time-- even those that had some issues (with the bank especially) got a great round of applause and the left the ring smiling and patting their horses. It anyone has a chance to see one- definitely go!!

Hey, Magic! I was there too! I agree with everything you said...it was really fun to watch. I think it would be even more fun to watch one outdoors.

I was surprised how many people DIDN'T have trouble at the bank. It was so much fun to watch how the horses reacted to it.

Awesome! Wish I could see one around here. In fact, I'd love to RIDE IN one. I"m only 36 but we used to ride similar type courses when I showed, at some of the schooling shows. I remember the tight turns, odd distances, the trot fence, the in and out, big gallops etc.
How high ws the walk fence???
