Here's a little Bubba update/brag, because he was just awesome today and because I have no one aound here that understands when I gush on and on about how much I love this little Hony. I've had Bubba a few months now and have been working him lightly a few times a week and he is turning into such a superstar! He really is just the best mover I've ever seen and now that he's balanced he's just amazing to ride. When I first got him my friends called him The Blob. He has such an enormous stride and such reach up under himself from behind and such a swing through his shoulder that he would get into forward motion and the motion would overtake him and he would get so "big" that he was constantly off balance and just generally all over the place. It's a pretty good problem to have though. I'd perfer to teach one to package himself up over trying to lenghthen a short one tight one any day. The funniest thing about him was that while his walk and trot were completely off balance, his canter was wonderful from day one. I've never ridden one like him. Every other baby I ever started was pretty balanced at the walk and trot and they'd be all over the place at the canter. He couldn't trot a circle, but could canter a pirouette. Well, finally all the pieces are coming together. I've really been working on his self carriage. His walk is now perfect. He's even figured out to walk in a very slight side pass down hill on his own to keep his balance shifted back onto his haunches. His trot is still needs a little work. He forgets and will get moving so huge, that he just gets going bigger and faster and faster, but he will rebalance and slow down with a gentle reminder. Although, he still needs reminders more often than I'd like. His canter departures and leads are now perfect as long as I remember to give him a step or two of haunches in. And his canter is to die for. He's so light and soft and easy. He's gonna be a great one! I'm planning on having my trainer Lauren Newmeyer show him in the Young Hunters at Devon. It should be funny to see all 14.3 3/4 hands of him and all 4'10" of Lauren in the ring with all the big warmbloods, but I'm pretty sure he'll be matching them stride for stride. Thanks for letting me gush on about him. |

LOL! My husband is the same, and when I complain he tries to remind me how I hate to hear about his golf game. I don't recall exactly who Bubba is....is he a small bay project pony? Sounds like he's perfect! I love a nice canter! Definitely post show pictures!! |

Oh awesome! Bubba sounds great. Somerset was the same way. Somewhat discombobulated at the trot (small circle to the right is still veeerrry confuzzling at times) but always really balanced and cadanced at the canter. That's a good sign, I think. It means they're going to have a nice canter to jump out of. Yay for Bubba! |

Trialbyfire, The bay pony is an old medium schoolmaster named King. He's as old and broke as any horse will every be. I love, love, love him. Bubba is my new 14.3 + hand Hony. I bought him from T-Dawg on this board. I found him through the classifieds on TOC. Here's a pic from when I first got him. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/23964...084673271yJOtMj He's going to be at the A shows at Gulfport, MS. in February for six weeks, so hopefully I'll have tons of show pics from there. The Hony is going south for the winter, and I'm staying here in the PA cold. Doesn't seem fair does it? Interesting that Somerset was the same way with the trot. I've broken tons and tons of babies and never met one like that before, but most of them were TB's, so that may be why. |

I also mostly rode green TBs before Somerset-- and I can tell you the trot/canter coordination issue was the single biggest difference. I can't wait to see Bubba show pictures! |

I'm still torn between a few show names, one choice I have is Bubba Gump, because he's a shrimp. I also really like Foxworthy, which someone on here suggested, and I showed him once under the name Sweet Tea. He's a really funny guy. You climb on him from the ground and think, "cute pony". Then he walks off with a step bigger than a 16.2 hand warmblood and you forget that he's so small. By the time you canter him you are convinced he's 17 hands. He crawls down the lines. It's such a shame that he overgrew. He would have been a big time pony hunter. Heck if he wasn't a Hony he would have been way out of my price range, so it works for me. He'll be a fantastic Adult Amatur horse. |

Bubba is by Mapleside Mr. Magic right? He's the result of crossing a pony (Excalibur Silver Snaffles) on a daughter of Magical. I have seen both stallions several times (and we have a Magical gelding, interestingly enough also nicknamed "Bubba" ) and their offspring and I am not surprised at what you have with your hony. The Magical offspring can move and Mr. Magic is such a gorgeous mover he will bring tears to your eyes. He's also a super good jumper - very high and tight with his front end and a beautiful topline with a good "breakover" of his head and neck. The biggest problem with ponies from this program is that there is a lot of horse lurking in the genes and you do get honies now and again. I am going to try to be at Devon for Breeding Day to cheer Bubba on. Sue |

SueL you are correct. He is by Mr. Magic who is by Silver Snaffles Excalibur. http://www.grandviewponies.com/deluxeponystars.html - a glimpse of Excalibur after being gelded. Many of Mr. Magic's offspring are spectacular, as is Bubba. Fortunately for Witchy he went over, unfortunate for me, he would have been a stunning pony hunter!! |

I didn't realize that Excalibur was a pinto. I guess that's where Bubba gets that funny patch of white just below his hock. |
