I blanket if they are thin skinned, skinny, or clipped. And I do have a blanket on hand for each and every pony here (12) --just in case it gets really nasty and wet out for a several day snap. They can lose more weight shivering to keep warm in a few days than I care to try to put back on. ( did I mention how much I love to blanket shop for ponies!!! ) I just found the most adorable size 42 blanket at vtosaddlery on Friday! It fits my small pony 4 month old PERFECT!
I "introduce" all my babies to a blanket at 4-6 mos old... and if they are tolerating it--they will wear it during the day for a few hours-- for a few days--JUST FOR PRACTICE. That way--if we need to use it--they are ready. And even if they don't end up needing to wear it--- They have another life lesson in their brain for their future job as show pony. Do not know too many show ponies that go blanketless.

Turn out blankets! Fun stuff............. :censored:

Just bought a couple (more) and yes, our weanlings wear them outside. Every single TB has them on and everyone that is "getting up there in age" wears one also. We live in the mountains and it's colder here than most places in Virginia.

I put on a rainsheet in crummy weather if they are out with blanketed horses because they are not going to use the shed by themselves. If I had a bunch that were all unblanketed, that would be great, but I don't. Never had a problem with them tolerating sheets, and their hair seems plenty fluffy on non-rainy days.
