Weanling
[ * ]
Question: Does anyone put sheets on weanlings in the winter to protect them from the wet cold?

I know that we want our youngsters to build up their immunity and be horses but I am wondering if anyone puts a sheet on them to just keep them dry.

My horses are turned out everyday and brought in at night. The really live the good life! If the weather is terrible, then they stay in but if the weather is so so, they go out and are happier this way.

I have started to feel bad for putting out the yearling and weanling in the rain as fall/winter is upon us. Any suggestions? Maybe I just need to suck it up and say horse need to be horses.....

Thanks!

I have my 5 month old weanling blanketed, and he loves it! I feel better knowing he is out in the rain during the day with his blanky on. But then again, I am a big wuss, and spoil my horses.

I did with my 2006 weanling who is a chestnut TB and grows no hair (just like his Dad). However, my 2007 weanling is a little furrball and is in at night and can get into her stall during the day if she wants. She also has hay in front of her all the time and munches away.

My 8 month old has a big winter coat..so I don't know if he'd want one..I did get the blanket out for one of my horses and decided to put it on him to see what would happen..he was fine with it..so RIGHT now, I'd do that for fun..just so they won't go crazy when you really need it on them..

I KNOW they are horses..but when they are standing out there and wet and shivering..blankets are a good thing..

If he doesn't have a big winter coat, I'd blanket. There is nothing worse for a thin coated horse than to be cold and wet.

Not usually.

I plan to take two to Devon next year (as Yearlings), and so I sucked it up and started with sheets and will add stable blankies under when it gets really cold. Otherwise, (up here) they won't shed out until June!!! Since I am taking two, and am not sure WHICH two (of four), I am blanketing them all.

I prefer that my horses go without the extras. I think it is healthier and safer. Of course, if I had a horse showing or in work they would have to wear clothes. It is important though that they have shelter from the rain and wind if they want it. Run in sheds are a must!

My babies go naked as I think it's safer & healthier. They have access to a well bedded run-in but they are out 24/7. Granted, I do not live in an extreme climate, so they do just fine. They both have big coats & look to be ready to live in Antarctica!

Ditto! A horse is actually warmer without a blanket and it is healthier for them. You actually make a hores less warm in the winter by blanketing. You flatten the hair and it is less insulating and less warm. Of coure you do need a run in shed or to bring them out of the rain and snow.

A show horse that is clipped must have a blanket to keep them warm as they have no hair.

We just started with a sheet on my 9 month old, to try and keep him from getting too hairy. He accepted it just fine and has not tried to take it off! (which amazed me) We'll put a blanket on him when it gets really cold.

Oh let me see...I won't use names to protect the guilty!

A few years ago my friend had a very late foal (born around Oct. 1) due to an accidental breeding. It was a small pony too, so this thing was tiny! She went to a local tack shop that sells used stuff, which will remain nameless, but the owner and official tack inspector is highly opinionated. My friend asked for a foal blanket, "Snapperhead" the owner (as she is known around town) proceeded to rant for a solid 15 minutes about how foals shouldn't wear blankets and it is so unhealthy, etc. After she finished huffing and puffing, my friend said, "so do you have any foal blankets?" Snapperhead was not pleased and stormed off! ;) If you know who "Snapperhead" is, and have seen her in action, you can relate to that story and find entertainment value in it! :P

We blanketed our guy last winter on wet days, he was able to take the blanket off leaving every strap and buckle still fastened (even the criss-cross leg ones). Thankfully he was unharmed in the process and to this day I still can not figure out how he did that!

no blanketing here :innocent: I agree with others who have said they get colder with blankets - flattens down their hair. And when it rains, they are smart enough to go to the run-in :).... usually
