Does any one out there have any good suggestions for treating white line? She has some separation but is not real ouchy (yet). The farrier trimmed her down real well and we discussed using the copper Sulfate crystals. any other ideas? Also if you like the copper sulfate, what is the recipe for that?

Thanks
Z

Our farrier told us to use Cleantrax. I would be interested in hearing about copper sulfate.

My farrier recommended Thrush Bandit CS, by Airshod (for both thrush and white line disease). I just ordered it, so can give an update once I've used it.

Thanks,

I had been using thrush buster and obviously it is not a good product as it just got worse.
When My draft mare came here she had white line and I used the Copper Sulfate. It cleared up in a few weeks and at the end of 12 weeks she was all better. I just cant remember the "recipe". I will try googling it.

Just trying to see if there is that one product that anyone "swears by". :)

Merthiolate, if you can find it. Kills it very well.

My old gelding had it when I got him, he had to have a wall resection. I used that and also Thrush Buster, and it worked.

A strong iodine works too, but medical grade, not the over the counter stuff.

My mare is now doing well. She had to have the whole top layer of her hoof removed twice to get to it. The best thing is air. The little beasties that cause white line can't survive in air. I also soaked her foot with an equal dose of White Lightning, white vinager and water. Get the white lightning from your farrier. Soak about 45 minutes. I put it in 2-1 quart size (one inside the other) freezer bags and once I knew she was o.k. with it, I used vet wrap to hold it on her foot and let her eat while waiting. I did that twice in one week and then ignored it unless she got her foot muddy, then I would hose it off and let it dry. Your horse will need an area where the foot can be dry for a period each day. We did put shoes on my horse as so much hoof was gone that we didn't want her to split like a cow. She is allowed on pasture all she wants and just brought in once a day for feeding. By the way, she never went sore and I have been riding her as normal with some pretty long rides even over rocky areas. Hope this helps

My pony had a VERY mild case of it about two years ago. We used iodine and Thrush Buster and it cleared right up. My farrier, who called the pony "Coward" and "Fleabiscuit" said that air is the best thing for it too. Being obsessive (which anyone who knows me knows that I am VERY good at) about the cleanliness of their feet can help keep the bacteria from entering.

Banixx was developed for White Line disease and has been very successful in lots of other things too. you can find out about it on www.banixx.com . My neighbors started the company and we have used it for a while now with great success with lots of different problems. I have not had one with White Line but I do know that the farrier that they use says it is great and he is one of the best in the country. You should give it a try.

Is there anything you can do to prevent white line? How does it come to be?

It is my understanding that is is like thrush , a bacteria, it affects the white line the part between the sole and the hoof wall. Usually comes from wet pastures, dirty stall ect. I assume good hoof care is key. My pony came with this problem, she was in a small sandy paddock with 4 other horses, and it was flithy as can be in there. It seems that a solution of copper sulfate crystals and water have been doing the trick. I will see at the next farrier appt how she is doing but she looks pretty good to me .

My old farrier (who was excellent, but I moved out of the area) recommended putting Koppertox on the nail holes and any cracks a couple times a week to help keep white line away, as well as harden the hoof.
