What a fabulous report, thanks for sharing! I'm so interetsed in side saddle - you mentioned his back wasn't in shape - what kind of special conditioning do you do? Does side saddle create un-evenness in the horse and/or rider? Do you take lessons? Tell us about your turnout - what is required and what special touches did you do to bring home the prize?

And most of all, we want PICTURES!!!

The sidesaddle is much heavier than an astride saddle...it's more like the weight of a western saddle. And you sit much more than in an astride saddle. So in terms of being "fit", it's simply a question of "time in the saddle" to build it up. If I ride him in it a bit every ohter day or so for about 2 weeks, building up the time each day, he'd be ready to go hunting in it.

No, there is no uneven-ness for either horse or rider. You are sitting straight, with a seat bone on each side of the spine when aside, you just happen to have both lower legs on the same side. Your right thigh crosses over the spine, and that is your center of gravity, as opposed to your hips when astride.

No, I don't take lessons. I'm pretty much self-taught. I did take 2 jumping lessons from Jocelyn Dayus (nee MacDonald) when I first started, just to make sure I was doing it right. If you know how to ride astride, you can pretty much figure out how to ride aside if 1. the saddle fits you and 2. the saddle fits your horse.

My turnout was pretty much my show attire, with a few additions. Show attire being: navy habit, canary vest, navy britches, white stock, black dress boots, top hat, veil, spur, brown leather gloves, sandwich case with turkey sandwich on white bread/crusts removed/cut on diagonal/wrapped in waxed paper and sherry in my flask, raingloves under the offside billets, hunt whip, sewn-in double bridle, breastplate, no stirrup pad in the iron, and a 3-fold girth and leather balance girth. Now for the additions. My britches had 4 buttons sewn on the left leg, below the knee but above the boot, with a black garter above the boot, through the loop at the back of the boot, and settled between the 3rd and 4th buttons. My boots in addition to being polished on the top part, were also polished on the sole. Quest had his chestnuts darkened as well, and of course his hooves painted. I also made sure to polish the off-side of my saddle so it really glistened (clear shoe polish does the trick), and whiten the linen on the bottom (white liquid shoe polish).

LOL, trust me, I want pics too! :P

That is a lot of turn out! So the sandwich case thing....do they look at what you have in there? Does making a good sandwich get you more points? Does it have to be turkey? Sorry for the dumb questions...it just sounds so interesting! And pics! We definitely need pics!

Three cheers for Quest and Devon, this was a great day for you!! :one:
Put me on the list to see the pictures, I bet there will be some great ones.

Regarding the sandwich, yes, it has to be turkey and yes they should check it. Apparently roast beef was too heavy for a "ladies" tummy, that is why the tradition is turkey. The sandwich is pretty basic though, and no, they don't taste it! Maybe a lucky JRT is the recipient after a day out hunting but certainly not a human unless you actually ate it while hunting! ;)

I actually had to broil some turkey on the morning of, if you can believe it, because I forgot to pick up some turkey lunch meat the day before. So when they pulled my sandwich out to check, I laughingly informed them that it was "cooked fresh that morning!".

And yes, my Corgi gets to eat it afterwards. Yuck, is all I can say... :P
