Why is horse shopping so frustrating? I know exactly what I want and its nearly impossible. I thought maybe I would spread the word for what I am looking for. I am looking for a clydesdale mare. Completley broke, non spooky, husband/child safe. Goes under saddle, I have no interst in driving right now. Size not that big of an issue but bigger the better. Must be a bay with whites, can have some black on the whites. $3,000 or less. I have found one I am interested in in Georgia, she is very nice. I just hate to jump on the first one I see.

I know its getting really picky but this is really what I want, just a dream horse. :cloud9: I just thought that as some of you were perusing horse ads if you came across one that you would drop me line and let me know. I have tried dream horse, horsetopia, draftsforsale, equine.com and thats all I know of.

So just spreading the word incase anyone knows or has any leads! Thanks! BTW I have been looking for quite some time now.

You know, if you feel like taking a little bit of a road trip, the World Clydesdale Show is in Wisconsin this year ;)

http://www.worldclydesdaleshow.com/

Might be a good place to make a few connections, and put out the word that you're looking.

Might also be a decent resource. And I'll put in a good word for the Airgoods (and their horses) as well. They're lovely folks who raise lovely horses.

Thanks everyone! I will try those resources today. I would LOVE to go to the World Clydesadale show! Unfortunately we have plans that weekend.

Can you imagine seeing all those clydes in one place? Oh my tom you would never get me out of there! :cloud9:

I Am trying to find a date to get up to Georgia to see the one there. If I were shopping for a gelding it would be a different story, there are a lot of them! There are a lot of mare but some are so high priced I dont even bother. I will post a link later to the one I am looking at a get y'alls opinions.

I like her and spoke to her owner. The only thing I see with her is she doesnt have that classic clyde head. She looks more refined. But I like her.

She does have a very pretty refined head, and I like her expression.

The very first thing that jumped out at me, though, is that she has way less muscle mass than I would expect to see on an 8-year old draft horse. Might be a bit of EPSM, which is easily managed with diet, or could just be a result of her current routine. I'd imagine a vet check is on your to-do list, so if you like her otherwise, it may well be worth a look.

Just my opinion, though, which is worth about as much as you paid for it

How much do these things eat?????

Less than a thoroughbred

In all seriousness, the draft gelding I used to own was very large, and after he got to the age where he was no longer growing like crazy, he ate about 3 flakes of mostly grass hay 2x a day, and no grain. And from what I hear, he was not atypical. One of my good friends also breeds the larger leggier hitch type Belgian Drafts, and more of them are pretty easy keepers.

Yes, they're large, and it's important to keep enough roughage moving through them, but on the whole, they've got pretty slow metabolisms, and aren't prone to exerting themselves more than is absolutely necessary. This is a generalization, of course, and there are exceptions.

Some professionals have also theorized that up to 2/3 of draft horses may be prone to developing EPSM, but that since many of them are fairly easy keepers, and the traditional feeding programs used by families that have been breeding for generations have been similiar to the recommended EPSM diet, it never becomes an issue for many of them. Should you have a draft horse that is not an easy keeper, it is well worth reading up on how to feed to avoid EPSM symptoms, since it is so prevalent. And these days there are quite a few low-starch commercial feeds on the market to take advantage of.

Rural heritage has a good collection of articles by Beth Valentine on the subject.

I agree they do not eat alot. I have a Suffolk Punch and she eats less than my pony :o

She gets a handful of Super horse 10% and about 2-3 flakes of Tifton 85 hay. She is an extremely easy keeper, but then again she is not rideable so its not like she is burning any calories either.

I had her on the EPSM diet but there was no change there. She does have good mucle mass for being a pasture puff.
