Has anyone here done this? If so, can you tell me how it usually works? I'm considering this and would love to hear others experiences. How do they usually determine the value of the horse? Any input or experiences greatly appreciated, thanks everyone. |

I run the riding program at a school, so I should be able to answer your questions. First - contact the program you are interested in. Speak with the Director of the program and ask what their specs are for donations. They should be able to tell you up front what your horse would be used for, how many times a week it would be used, what the turn out facilities are, what kind of farrier and vet services they have, what are the plans for a horse after it's usefulness is over, and answer any other questions. Most schools will accept an appraisal from any trainer - just be warned - a lot of schools won't accept a horse valued over $5K because they have to keep it for 3 years. Anything under $5K they can sell. The IRS will only give you about 1/3 of the appraised value as a write off, so find a number you can live with. The most important thing to find out is what the school will do with the horse if it doesn't work out. Will they contact you? Find it a new job? Or just send it off to wherever... A school can not accept a donation with any strings attached, so they can not write down promises. Know that going in! |

Are you talking about a donation to the RIDING program or the VET program? Vet programs, IIRC, are allowed to do anything they want w/ a donated horse.
