My filly spent her first night by herself last night and then today she was separated from her mom and turned out with "Uncle" Chocolate. Chocolate is an incredibly sweet OTTB gelding. He retired after a long career with quite a bit of racing jewellery, but he was still doing okay. Then he contracted EPM
However, he recovered and is now pasture sound again. His job on the farm is weanling uncle and he does a fabulous job. He has just the right touch with the babies and is firm but kind. Here are some pics of Chocolate and Minx. Minx wanted her momma and she was giving Chocolate a hard time, but he stayed calm and got her to relax and eventually they were eating hay together like old buddies
If you ask me, all breeding farms should consider giving a home to a kind old racetrack campaigner, just to have a reliable and safe weanling supervisor. And dear old Chocolate has earned his retirement
He is such a good, kind soul.In this one Minx is being a little devil and pushing back into Chocolate. He just backed up a little and then stood his ground: ![]() He is trying to discourage her from running the fence line here: ![]() |

I opened my horsie home to an 18 yr old OTTB broodie. she had 9 foals and couldn't concieve this yr. She is wonderful and has a great attitude with the babies and is respectful of the mommies........but can't wait to get them under her wing...... I think she's just grumpy and slow enough to not deal with any stupidity or play that might hurt someone, at the same time kind and gentle with the little ones. I wean the end of Oct. (OMG!!!!!) Love the pictures Turtledove. Mary |
