My filly was born a creamy color, shedded to the color on my avatar, and is now turning really dark, almost black (sooty) on her neck, head, shoulder, and leg tops....the only thing bucky looking is her back and the front of her face. Never having a buckskin before, I am surprised at all her colors so far. I've never seen such drastic color change on a horse before...and she's under 6 months old!!! Is this continuous and will she always be a surprise color?

Hey Mary... who cares... she gorgeous! <3

Maybe one of the color guru's could answer your question. I know my buckskin gets darker in the winter. You know you can manipulate the shades with...

When you want lighter use the Gold-As-Sun... darker Black as Knight. :teehee:

I knew about the black as knight, but not the gold as sun!!!!

I have been known to dye black tails, back to black and I can whiten a stained tail like no-one can......I am/was a hair dresser/barber.

Thanks Bill.

I am happy with my little girl, I string tested her over 17 hands, and I pulled that string as tight as I could!!!! She's butt high and getting goofy looking, but she still has all the right stuff. this new color just makes her look dirty....

<_<

has anyone ever clipped a buckskin???

Your little girl is showing you that she is in fact a BUCKSKIN...the darkness on her wither, and the shadowing along her neck are all characteristics...she should have a "mask" too..and darker ears on the backside..a dorsal stripe is always nice too....she should also have "frosting" on/in her mane and tail..lots of Dun Factor..I forget if a Buckskin is a Dun or a Dun is a Buckskin..which ever..they are both nice colors that seem to change all the time..right in front of your eyes!!!!

I got mine and she looked like the color of a squirel..she shed out a nice dark buttermilk..and this year she was carmel...mine has always had the Chocolate points..not black..I really don't think that will ever be..my favorite Dun Factor on mine is her dorsal stripe..it goes into her tail..

Do you have any close ups of her????? I'd love to see them before the woolies set in...

Also..can you tell me how to do the string test..and when to do this???? Thanks

HH :)

HH, you are so right!!! She does have a mask also! No dorsal stripe yet but great coloring in her tail and mane.....it'll be awesome braided. No close-ups but i'll try to get some before she gets wooley......actually I don't think she'll get wooley....mommy needed a blanket all last winter....no coat... and Kiddies is even finer than her moms.

2 ways to string test......test and practice on a mature horse....front of leg, mid knee to coronary band.....the number is the height, examle....13 and a half inches equals 13.2 hands. The other test is from elbow to mid ankle, swing string/rope up and over to center of withers. Tells you how much more they will grow. As I said practice and test the string test on a mature horse first.

I don't know how accurate they are, but I've found them pretty good with TB's coming off the track and still growing.

How's about some pictures of your pretty baby?

I'm so mad at her I could SPIT...and I did...

She would NOT get into the trailer..so we missed that little show on Sunday..She was all cleaned up etc..and looked good --to me anyway....

I did find some good pics from this spring..I'll see if I can transfer them over..just her head..but still a cutie..kinda woolie...so maybe I'll wait..

did your's dapple out this summer???? You can't beat a buckskin that has the dapples..I feed her BOSS..and I think it does that to them..because my brown gelding..who I swear is a smutty buckskin himself...dapples out in golden tones when he eats the seeds...plus it makes them sooo soft

That'd be the dun factor kicking in! Very normal for a buckskin.
Here are some neat photos!

This is cool! Tigger, my yearling, is a buckskin paint. he has no dorsal stripe yet, but he sure has almost everything else, including the dark hair along his neck. I am quite anxious to see how he is going to look next year. He is a very creamy/gold colour right now, with a mix of white and black hairs in his mane.

So buckskins have the dun factor? I thought they were different. I know a buckskin has the black, bay, and one cream dilute gene.....piggybacked is the term I read.

She has the "frosting" in her mane and the cream hairs on the top of her tail. her shadowing is different then what I saw.....it's all underneath her, not on the top line.....but it's really dark. She is dappled, mom is really dappled also. She is really colorful, with the dark shadowing to gold with cream dapples.......I am just surprised how fast the dark sooty color showed up,... with in days. Ar first I thought she was losing her hair.....but Thank goodness it's just her newest color. Whew.

Love the links!!! I thought the tiger stripes were cool.

There is a dun gene and a cremello gene. They are different. Bays with the dun gene can look very similar to a bay with the cremello gene. So there has always been a lot of confusion between the two.

Dun on chestnut is a red dun (like a washy chestnut--lighter body--darker mane and tail). Cremello on chestnut produces palomino.

They are very different dilution genes.

On the site posted, I saw a buckskin stallion, Brilliant Intuition. Any one know anything about him? Feel free to PM me.

Kiddie is by a palomino stallion and a bay mare, so she is a cremello dilute, ta da.......buckskin. No dun huh?

I'd love to see the buckskin paint little diva.

Hows the Apollo girl Ladybug? i cant wait to see her next baby. Didn't you breed her to a welsh??? uuuuuuu.....aahhhhhh....oooooooh....that's so nice.

I would suspect the TB's are eligible for registy with the IBHA and ABRA as well.

There is more info on their sites about color, registration, shows etc..
They do actually have Dun Factor classes at their shows. Pretty neat to see the markings that are out there!

I have heard it said that a true buckskin will not have a Dorsal Stripe, but then again I've heard the exact opposite.. So, I guess I will not pretend to be an expert!

Well, not exactly true. I have a bay may with a dorsal stripe that's quite pronounced. It's called countershading, and I know buckskin's can have them too (and other colors).

I think it's the dun who can't be a dun without the dorsal stripe, but I'll let someone else chime in about that.
