So a vet at my clinic has hooked me up with one of the vet techs to come and work with my OTTB (broodmare). This young woman has her own OTTB and from what I've heard has done quite a bit of OTTB training as well as given lessons, continues to show, etc. I have heard her recommended by 2 different vets and the guy who built our arena; all have commented on her great riding skills (e.g. velcro seat!) and that she's pretty fearless and looking to make extra money by working with horses....sounds almost too good to be true! I have a call in to her but haven't heard back yet....hoping to talk to her today. Any idea of what the going rate for this type of training is? When I contacted a 'big-name' OTTB foundation trainer they said they would charge $75/hour [possibly because of the distance]. The kid that did ride my mare a few times charged $25/hour. I think $25 is probably too little and $75 too much......but really have no idea. And do you pay "by the ride" v. hourly? I would think that initially she will not be working with my mare for an hour - I think she'd keel over dead! Also, and of course I will ask her what she prefers, but would you normally expect to have the horse groomed, tacked and ready to go when trainer arrives? Or is this part of the trainers job? Thanks for any input - I'm really so excited to actually have someone help me work with this mare. She is very sane and reasonable, but as a 12 year old that has had 5 or 6 babies in a row she's pretty darn rusty and I just don't think I'm the person to really bring her back into work. Updates later, hopefully!

with a full time professional who has a tight scehdule to keep you get an hour, which means an hour of either riding a tacked up horse or an hour of grooming tacking up and riding....pick your poison. depending on travel, $75 is not off the mark. Typically someone who comes to you is $40-65/hour and then there may be a travel charge like 5 or 10$. remember they are losing the ability to make money teaching someone else when they are traveling so the blended rate with travel probably is closer to $30-40 an hour even at $75 an hour. |

To add to RHowll's post, I would also assume that she would expect the horse to be at least groomed (if not tacked up) when she arrives. Most trainers charge by the ride when working from their barn, but I'm not sure how they will charge for travelling, although I agree with RHowell that it is probably closer to $65-70. |

The trainer I've been working with will come out to my place at times and I pay $25 for travel and the regular hourly rate for a private lesson. My horse is always cleaned and ready to go. I'm usually on and walking around the ring by the time the trainer gets there. |

Thanks for your replies so far. I just wanted to add - I don't mean to imply that $75 is too much to pay a trainer; I realize that doesn't add up to a whole lot if you do it for a living (not to mention that potential for bodily harm, etc!) I was trying to point out too possible ends of a local spectrum....since this woman is not a professional trainer, I doubt she will charge $75, but not sure yet. The kid who charged me $25/hour was a local teenager who had done some training.....definitely at the other end of the spectrum. For another reference; a 30-minute private lesson on a barn-owned horse at the barn where I take lessons is $35....so $70/hour for a private lesson. I don't know the trainer's cut of that (50%?) but just to give you an idea of the local rates....that's probably low end of average for my area. So for now I'll definitely plan to have the horse groomed and inside when she arrives; not sure if she'll want to do some ground work to size her up before riding anyway. You guys are great! Thanks! |

Just heard back from the new trainer! she sounds very enthusiastic and likes working with OTTBs (especially the "special" cases!) And believe it or not she is only charging $30/session. Little does she know I would pay more than that! But maybe it's the going rate around here? Hopefully my mare will be good to her or I wil definitely feel guilty!Anyway, we are waiting until next week because of my mare's minor eye injury and the trainer's schedule.....but I'm really thrilled. Maybe I can get her mane pulled before then so she looks really purdy. |

Well, you can always give her some special perks if she does a nice job with your ottb - things like a bottle of wine, a Gift Cert to a restaurant or day spa, some decadent chocolates, you get the idea. Or even a bit extra $$ in the envelope - especially if it's nasty out or if the ottb is nasty that day. |

I think $30/session is fair for your area....and I assume she won't ride for a full hour, because yes wealthia would keel over! |
