Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. The farrier who gave me the information is also a long time Hunter breeder, so she sees this alot. Not to mention she is partners with my vet...

SilverBells - I believe you know Westportes owners since you purchased Bear from them correct? Channay noticed it a tiny bit at the inspection, and I spoke with her again recently and she said to cut grain out completely. She said if your mare is a little skinny your foal will have perfect joints.

They are not hugely thick, just a tiny bit square...he is not sore on them at all, so I think if I get this feeding thing sorted out then it will clear up no problem. The thing is some people say its because they are getting too much, and others say they need to be getting more of something else...more foal growth related. The mare is getting a broodmare/Nursing mare grain reccommended by the nutrisitionist. This is supposed to be for growing foals as well, I will find out the brand today.

Yes I did purchase West Hampton "Bear". This condition is very common, and while I have no first hand experience... anyway I just wanted everyone to put your mind at ease because I would be nervous too! ;)

I love your colt! <3

Silver Bells - Thanks! I love him too, he is my baby...lol

Oh and yes this is my first foal, so you can see why I am nervous. I am actually going to give my vet a call, and she what she says. I also left my a message for my nutritionist asking what he suggests.

Bear is adorable by the way!

Bear leaves to come east next Wednesday... I can't wait. Also pick Channay and her mother's brain... they know their stuff! :one:

I totally agree, they are wonderful.

I just spoke with my vet she said switching to a lower quality hay and cutting Image's grain in half (and taking it out of reach for him) should take care of the problem all together. Her next suggestion if that doesn't take care of it in a couple weeks, was to seperate them during the day in paddocks, so he doesn't drink her milk during the day and put them back together at night...so I feel alot better knowing we have a plan!

That is exciting about Bear, he was wonderful at the Inspection, you must be very proud!

Just wanted to add that my vet never suggested reducing grain or the quality of hay.. just the switch in the feed. Oh and the mare (as all of my mares are) is a fatty

JellyBean - I got my inspection pics like a week or two after the inspection. And they sent me a 4x8 album and 2 8x10's (which I never ordered) but had to pay $70 for! But anyways...lol, I would give them a call or I have there email.

hoyersnowdon@shaw.ca

Email them and they should know what's going on

Norsire - Have you had foals with this problem before? And if you did what did you do to change it, nutrition wise I mean? Eisenhiem's is very minimal so I have no doubt that as soon as I get his nutrition changed around it will go away

My yearling got kicked right on the growth plate just above his knee and even though the resulting swelling was caused by the trauma rather than his nutrition, my vet had me start him on Osteo Form and to give him alfalfa hay or cubes. He also gets all the timothy/orchard grass hay he wants, beet pulp and a small amount of Triple Crown Growth. I just weaned my filly and she is getting the same.

The yearling is completely sound but will always have a bump over that knee. The vet feels it will be less noticeable as he grows. I'm keeping him for myself. Hubby wants me to sell all the babies but I have convinced him that even though it is basically just a blemish, he might be difficult to sell. So, I finally get to keep one of my babies
