Why Jilltx hires out for yardwork in the summer Yes, we have them at the barn too and they are thick in the trees this time of year. We call them Banana Spiders.![]() ...and in case you were wondering, here's a quarter next to him for size comparison. There were over 20 of them visible in ONE tree in our back garden and this guy was by far the smallest.

Yes (flies and bugs which is why I leave them the garden this time of year) and I've never heard of anyone being bitten and I've been here for 30+ years. They're really pretty as spiders go, but they blend so well that if you're cruising (or riding) along a dense path you're likely to have one illuminate seconds before impact and some are as big as my hand, no joke. You should see grown men do the spider dance this time of year.

jillintexas, what great photos you took! I really like to see things like that up close, but I do not want to walk into them or their webs. I end up screeching, swatting at the air, swearing, and jumping around like a complete nitwit. |

Those are very good spiders. I forget the name though. I've got one right next to my front door and I leave the outside lights on for maybe half an hour every night. Makes her hunting easier

We had these in FL, too, and I really do not mind spiders, I just would prefer they do not climb on me or my horse. Picture this, early morning ride, smell of the dewy earth beneath hooves, brush of spider web on my face - screaming at the top of my lungs and literally standing up on the saddle, while my not so calm QH dances around underneath wondering WTF has got into his crazy-ass mom!!! (Gales of laughter from my riding buddies!!!) |

Agh, I shouldn't have opened this thread!! I don't mind those spiders around eating bugs, as long as they stay out of my way!
I was picking tomatoes once this summer, and there was one almost that big on her (his?) web between the tomato plant and the fence. I quit picking near her and just left her alone... which is what I prefer they do for me too.

Ahhhh I see you are familiar with the "jitter bug" as well. I don't mind them at all, but I really don't like them on me. I swear I'd trample my own child fleeing from a ginormous bug if it were on me. I believe they're called Golden Orb Weavers, but I may (and probably am) wrong. Bugs aren't my thing as far as identification goes. I prefer feathered, furred of finned. ***edited to ad they are known as the following: Female Black and Yellow Argiope spider (Argiope aurantia), also known as a Yellow Garden Spider, Golden Orb Weaver, Yellow Argiope, Writing Spider, Golden Garden Spider, or Banana Spider. These spiders can be found throughout the lower 48 United States and southern Canada. Despite their large size, these spiders are not considered dangerous.*** Apparently they're related to the Black Widow and the Brown Recluse, but their venom is much less potent. |

Wow! What a beautiful spider!!!!!! The only cool ones we get are the ones who look like a skull (big bulbous white body with four black 'dots' that look just like a skull, unlike the Death's Head spider, which does NOT look like a skull). See if I can find a piccy. Otherwise, it's way too inhospitable for general beautiful life forms here *sigh*. |

I remember those when I lived in KS. We had one that would build a web across the main barn door every single day. I like my tarantulas better...probably because I never see them |
