Mr. Fishy and I were having this conversation over the weekend. What is luck? Why do some people seem to be lucky and some people seem unlucky? Which category would you put yourself in?

I've got to run off to work but will chime in upon my return! :one:

I am an extremely lucky person. My life is blessed with good health, great friends and family. As long as I have all that, I am grateful everyday.
I love my life, and that makes me lucky! :P :P :P

Funny... I was just thinking that BH2 is about the luckiest person I know.

I am lucky too. Where I work reminds me daily of how lucky I am.

Depending on what aspect of my life one choses to look at I could easily be considered one of the most unlucky, or the most lucky, people.

From a global perspective certainly anyone on this forum could be considered one of the luckiest people on this planet. When I look at my peers I would consider myself one of the most unfortunate. It's all perspective.

I am building a new house while living on a GORGEOUS farm for free. I am taking a trip to St. John this winter with my dear friend BH1. I have a job that I like that pays me well and gives me LOTS of free time to enjoy the beautiful area where I live.
How much luckier can I be?

I'm very lucky, very blessed for the most part.

Okay, so my horse is battling cancer, and so in my mom....but I count my blessings and see they are 10 fold starting with Mr DQ, my horse, his horse, family, friends, job.

Now if we could just have world peace, bring the troops home, and solve alcholism ....

Well, I know some people say there is no such thing as luck. That we create our own luck. I don't believe that, but....

I am lucky in some senses. My life is nice, I don't really want for anything....

However, when it comes to things that involve chance, like drawings for prizes, or give-aways etc, I'm the most unlucky. I never win stuff like that. Oh wait, before my senior year in high school I won a drawing at the county fair and got a free portrait sitting for me senior pictures. That might've been the last thing I won.

There's also this perspective of 'living in the grace of others' that I just can't do. These are the people who rely on others in their life to sort of take up the slack. My college roommate was like that. Everyone was always doing things for her to make her life easier. She was also the type to ask her professors for extensions...and get them. I would never DREAM of asking for a deadline extension, nor do I ask or expect people to help me with anything in my life. Even when my arm was broken, I had a hard time asking for help with little things (opening doors, washing dishes, changing sheets, etc). If something needs to be done...and no one volunteers (willing offers without prompts) to help, I'll find a way to do it myself.

Back from work...!

Mr. Fishy and I both consider ourselves to be lucky people. We are both healthy (knock wood!), we're in love :rose: , we live in a beautiful place where we have developed great friendships with our neighbors, and we're surrounded by our pets! He works from home, I have a PT job that pays me really well, and I get to ride whenever I want.

Of course there are things we want that we can't have because we don't have unlimited funds, but for the most part we are doing ok. When we were shopping for Mr. Fishy's new horse, we were wondering how we were going to pay for him, and wouldn't you know as soon as we found Vegas, Mr. Fishy got a call from his boss telling him that he got a bonus...that money bought the horse.

Like SnackPack, I've never been one to "win" things (like lotto - um...I keep playing, why haven't I won?!), and I think that a certain part of luck is achieved by making good decisions. People say we're lucky to live up here and have our horses at home. Well, yes, we are, but we didn't just float up here on a cloud. We made career decisions and lifestyle choices that allowed us to move up here. I don't make nearly the money that I used to. I'm not in a show barn - heck I barely go to any shows! - I trailer out for lessons once a week if I can swing it. I don't buy - or have a need for - fancy clothes. We don't really like our furniture, etc...

So if you look at the big picture, yes we are very lucky. But if you look at the small details, we have made choices that allow for our luck and sometimes there are trade-offs.

Unlucky to a fault! But, I don't have a bad life at all. I just have to work a little harder for it.

Perfect Example: I also never win drawings or door prizes. EVER. When I was little, I really wanted a mini bike. My parents could not afford one for me. One horse show was giving a mini bike away. Of course, I put my name in and kept my fingers crossed. I had really bad handwriting as a kid. When the name was called, it was so close to my name, my father and I ran over. Like if my name was Susan Smith, the kid who won was named Stephen Smith. I was sure it was my handwriting. Nope, there was a kid with a very close name to mine who won. And this was a small show. The next weekend, yep, they called my name. I won the door prize. A small camera identical to the one I had at home. And I mean identical!

A funny example, but that really shows the pattern of my life. I have to be careful if things are given out randomly. I started a sales job where accounts were given out purely by chance. My top ten accounts pulled all their advertising. It was not my sales skills. I did not stand a chance. One of the long time managers said they never saw anything like it.

My sister was extremely lucky. Always winning the best door prize, finding money on the street, picking up the wrong lead when the judge was not watching. I think because she was older, I did not get my fair share!

It really has nothing to do with having a good life or bad life. It has to do with the odds going in your favor. For most, it is probably 50/50 for me 25/75.

OMG, that totally describes me. I have had a very similar experience. Enough so that we all joke that to get rid of less than desirable clients, they just need to be given to me.

Oh definately a Lucky Person. Married to the man I've adored since I was 13. We have three of the best kids on the Planet, live where we want to live, both hubby and I are self-employed at jobs we love. I've got two great riding buddies, two great horses to ride, and 2.1 million acres to ride them in! :one:

The only thing I have ever won in a raffle, is a HORSE!! I won a yearling Morgan filly one year when the Riding Assoc for the Handicapped sent me 4 raffle tickets. Best $20 I ever spent!

While I've had some health issues, mainly I'm healthy and happy as is my family. Both sets of grandparents are still living, and realitively healthy too, at least for 80 year olds. ;)

I don't know if Life could get any better than this :cloud9:

The only cloud on my horizon is my beloved Carbonera will have to be put down soon. He is my little Peruvian Paso who I trail rode for years. Unfortunately, his arthritic hip is getting beyond what bute can help. :,( :,( I will miss him so much :lonely:

Lucky. My mother when I was growing up used to call me the "Golden Doo-Doo Girl," because no matter what happened, no matter bad things seemed to be, I would turn it around and make it work out in my favor. She would also occasionally use the word "manipulator." Although I prefer "negotiator." :innocent:

I have also won a bunch of stuff: the best, I once won a walk on part to the Music Man - on Broadway. Yeah, I've been on stage in a Broadway play. :one:
