Chevy 2500/3500 vs Dodge 2500/3500 vs the 80% rule......

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is what I want to tow:

5,000 pound trailer (GN, 3 horse slant load, or 2 horse straight load)

Max of three horses (say 1500 pounds each = 4500 pounds).

I am trying to decide whether to get a 2500 or a 3500 in either the dodge or the Chevy.

I orignally wanted a GMC, but those are so hard to find.

5000 pounds + 4500 pounds = 9500 pounds without gear, tack, people, etc.

I have heard that the rule is to only tow 80% of the towing vehicles recommended weight for live cargo..... ie; The dodge 2500 towing capacity is listed at approximately 12,000 pounds.

80% of 12,000 pounds = 9600 pounds. (which is really close to what I want to pull).

I feel like, according to this rule, I am right on the edge of needing a 3500 truck, instead of the 2500.

Whew. Thoughts?

I guess I'd say go with the most power you can afford and want to drive. I have a Ford F250 7.3L diesel. I'd love to have the power of an F350, but I didn't want a dually (hard to find one that's not). My F250 has done a fine job pulling my trailer so far. I have a 3H GN with a slant stall in front, two straight load stalls in the back, and room for a small pony in between the slant & straight stalls. I think the trailer weight is somewhere between 6,200-6,500 lbs. However, I will say that I've yet to put 3 horses in just - just 2 big boys.

Justwait...What kind of trailer do you have..it sounds like a 2 + 1..and that's what I'm thinking about getting..any pros or cons???? How is your horse??? Didn't he have to be on stall rest???? How did that work out....

thanks

HH - Thanks for asking about my knucklehead. He's doing very well so far. We've been trotting for about a month now and get to start cantering in about a week

Here is a link to the Hawk model I have. They call it a Walk Thru Slant.

http://www.hawktrailers.com/specs.asp?id=40

The only difference I see from the pic on the website is that mine has an escape door on the right side that opens into the area in front of the straight stalls but behind the full partitions. I love everything about this trailer, and the horses seem to really like it as well! In particular, I love that everything inside is removable, which gives you a lot of different options for configuration. Equispirit makes the same trailer (it used to be made by Hawk, but last I heard was made by Trailet), but at the time I bought mine its price was about $6,000 more than the Hawk.

Sorry Naters, not trying to hijack the thread :)

Yeah, Sorry Naters...I really do want to see the answers you get about the pick-ups...I drive a 1988 Chevy....YES 88 and it's on it's last wheel...I went into a coma when I saw the stickers on the 250's...wow-wee...

I tried to email Justwait..but she's being shy with her address and had to use this thread..sorry :(

I really LOVE the concept of the 2 + 1s and I think it will work with bringing the mommas and babies to the inspections..and if they are really "convertable" then I guess I can get hay in it too..

Does your's have the FULL dividers/gates to the front stall..I really like that..I have seen one that only has the big padded bar..and I was thinking what if you get into a biting the butt fight??? so the full gates is a good thing..

Naters...what kind/type of trailer do you have????

Have an awesome day..

HH :)
