I got very good news last night. I am currently boarding Shane (retiree OTTB) at a lovely barn in Franklinville NJ. He is very happy, the BM is wonderful but... (1) I don't get to see him as often as I'd like because a good 20 minutes further away than the riding horses in Mullica Hill, he lives out, there are no lights, it's a bit of a hike to his field from where the cars are etc.; and (2) the farrier, while sweet and well intentioned, is not doing a good job. I would have KILLED to pasture board Shane where Stoney and Somerset are-- but that BO doesn't allow pasture boarding and Shane cannot be stalled due to his stifle issues. Well, the BO decided to make an exception and allow Shane and one of the trainer's mother's horses to be pasture boarded. We don't know when (probably not until November) or how much (please be affordable). But I can finally have all my guys at the same place. Shane can be shod by the divalicious but extremely talented farrier... and if/when I decided to try him back under saddle-- I'll have the trainer right there plus a nice conducive facility. Best thing that's happened to me in regards to Shane in about a year. It was December that I retired him in the first place, and other than his FEET... he's looking sounder and healthier than ever. So once we get the feet in order.... knock on wood... maybe he'll be sound to be a light hack/trail horse. No better place for THAT then the lovely facility in Mullica Hill. So, YAY! |

I'm avoiding the bathroom thread, since my in-laws like to discuss that stuff freely on the phone, while eating dinner, in the grocery store...you get the idea How about we discuss the equestrian access to public trails in your State? PA is right now in the middle of developing its five year plan and are asking for comments and holding a series of public meetings. More info on DCNR plan & way to comment here I'd be interested to see how many other states have more than the obligatory '20 miles' of bridle path that was (I was told) mandated many years ago. Most of those original paths (at least here) have fallen into disrepair. OTOH Great strides have been made toward establishing some great multi-use trails (horse/mt. bike/hiking) in this area, with attention being given to ample parking for rigs, and even some overnight camping. My Kudos
to the DCNR for seeing the need for such, and coming thru on their promises to create them in conjunction with help from riding groups. All the trails I've ridden are awesome-great scenery, clearly marked, great footing and good parking facilities. Another question to ask would be how do you, as an equestrian, feel about sharing State Lands with 4 wheelers and motorcycles? Or should I just make this a seperate post?

that is great news VXF111. I've been following your shoeing thread on CoTH with interest. I think field board can be great for 'hoof issue' horses as along as the farrier is doing his job correctly as well. At least that is my experience here, I've had a bunch of horses come in that ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY (according to owner or trainer) have to have four shoes. After some time on pasture, most of them can at transition to barefoot pretty successfully. Of course they are retired (I'm Old Friends Farm retirement to those who are now confused) Let me note that there will always be some that will wear shoes till the day they leave this earth. Thankfully, they are few.

I only made it part way through the bathroom post before I had to close it; silly me was eating lunch and let's just say it was more than I could take. My good news: well, aside from the $130 vet visit for my OTTB mare's swollen eyelid (ok, maybe the good news is that there is no corneal abrasion but I still somehow have to get ointment in her eye 4-5 times a day )....anyhoo the vet asked a lot my mare and asked whether I ride her and I told her my sob story about not being able to find a trainer and being too chicken to really do it myself. In fact, yesterday I went to two places to peruse the business cards and postings on bulletin boards hoping to find a trainer......I have been riding my mare cautiously at the walk and trotting her on the lunge, and basically decided this week I need to find a trainer or give up; I don't have the confidence to really do it myself (or the desire to be the trainer!) and I'm home alone most days and it's just not getting done..... Anyway.....she knew two young women that work at the vet clinic that she thought would take the job; both very good riders, both do some training (as well as riding), both live nearby and both really trying to earn some extra money in the horse field. My expectations for this mare are very low and she's actually been very good -- so hopefully we'll actually find a person who can work with her enough to get her walk/trot for me for a while and then we'll decide what (if anything) else we should do.... |

Good news, hmmmm? How about yet another AWESOME lesson today on my baby boy? We have had a string of lesons so good that even my trainers (who, by the by, told me in no uncertain terms that bringing my baby to live at home would be the ruination of all our competitive goals) had to admit I must be doing SOMETHING right. Ahhhhh....vindication!
