I thought life was going great!!! We are closing on our new house on Wednesday and then on Oct 19th, we were to close on our existing home. A lovely widow was moving from New Mexico back to PA to be with her daughter and grand children.

Home inspection on our exisiting home goes past the 15 day limit. They did the inspection the last day possible. The radon test came back high and she asked for a credit to install a removal system. No biggie. We get the final committment letter from her mortgage company and good to go.

Then, the water test comes back and the bacteria levels are extremely high (again, easy fix, we are having a UV light installed tomorrow morning). We are not sure what the heck has happened to our house in the 5 years since we had our home inspection. Everything went from normal levels to high levels.

Well, this woman has some sort of emotional breakdown. She had been packing her home preparing for the move and I guess seeing her husband's and knowing that the home in NM was his last home just hit her and she has decided now 24 days into the contract, she does not want to move. We had the release of contract faxed to us.

Now our home has been under contract for 24 days, no advertising, no showings, no nothing. We are FREAKING out to say the least. I can't deal with this, not right now.

My home is a mess. I'm in the middle of packing, I have movers coming on Thursday and now I have to get this house ready to start doing Open Houses again.

What the hell did we do to deserve this.

Don't mind me, I'll get off my soap box and go drink some contaiminated water and hang out in my radon filled basement!!!!

OMT, that is a very tough situation to be in. Why is it that real estate deals always seem to have something go wrong? I have no real advice, just good wishes that everything will eventually work out.

I'm so sorry. But yes, things can get worse. You can be selected for an IRS 100% Compliance Audit. That's what happened to us. 2004 was the worst year of our life. All kinds of medical bills, etc. And just a few weeks ago, the IRS told us they wanted every single tomdamn receipt supporting every single penny of deductions. Or just send them a check for several thousand dollars. Have your records in good order in case this happens. Good luck!

Things can always be worse. Cancer is one of them. Count your blessings.

Everything happens for a reason. You will find the right buyer and things will get better. But please, don't EVER ask if things can get worse. I've known more people who've gotten cancer in 2007 than I ever care to know. My BFF's marriage is ending and she's left to deal with an Autistic son on her own. My brother is hooked on cocaine and my parent's are left with the decision to kick him out of his house (they bought) and put him on the street. Mom has breast cancer. The list goes on.

Count your blessings.

Yes, things can get worse. It's all about perspective.
That being said, sorry about your housing woes. Real estate deals gone bad are stressful and a total pain.

It's crazy what people have to go through. I know a woman who's husband is end stage Huntingtons, brother is HIV +, and her mother has Alzhiemers.
Can it get much worse than that?

I feel your pain about the elderly woman rescinding the contract. From my experience with own mom, I think that's not an uncommon situation. I wonder whether, after a few more days, she may ultimately decide that she wants your house again. I went through that with my mom after my dad died, when we sold the home that they built together and that we kids all grew up in. It was totally her decision to put it on the market, but once she had a contract on it she wanted to back out of the sale. And when we convinced her not to, she became so distraught that she landed herself in the hospital with a heart attack. That actually convinced her that she needed to let go and sell the house, but it was a horrible experience for everyone involved. I know this is a massive inconvenience for you, but you may want to give some thought to what you would do if her realtor contacts you again asking to reinstate the sale.

Unfortunately also with the market right now, people are using any excuse to get out of real estate deals. Part of the reason why if we try to sell we wont be buying anything for a while afterwards.

You don't say anything about the financial impact. Yes things could be much worse, you could be one of the millions of people with homes they cannot afford, that are worth less than they paid, and are facing foreclosure. If the worst thing that happens is you have to own 2 homes for a while and can financially afford to do so without facing backruptcy or homelessness, count yourself very blessed.

I keep reminding myself that we have our health and each other right now. It's just financially it really sucks. We can afford to pay both mortgages, we just don't want to.

I am more then willing to reinstate the contract if she has a change of heart and apply her deposit back (which is on it's way to us now). I'm hoping her daughter can convince her but I'm not putting my eggs in that basket.

I hate not having control of a situation. It seriously drives me out of my mind.

I'm sorry E&E, that's frustrating. But you know what? She wasn't the right buyer. The right buyer is out there. They will find the house. It's just a matter of time.

Sorry bout the buyer EEmom but yeah it can be a lot worse...
like being 8512.00$ in hole to land lord, have had 24$ in last 2 month to but food for family of 4 the same 24$ to put gas in 2 cars and female products. not able to get a loan even for a peice of 1 cent bubble gum because your credit is so bad it is on life support to get out of the hole. You have 3 cut off notices..totaling 500$ and you have 25$ in the bank...
And when you do what you really do not want to do but have to because your child(ren) are hungry to put a bit of food into his( their) stomach(s) you get yelled at before 7am.
So yeah it could be a lot worse..
