I Visited Candy Mountain and All I Got Was This Lousy Incision

I just need to write this out somewhere... Right before thanksgiving last year my best friend was diagnosed with leukemia. By Christmas he had already had his first chemo. Everything looked like it was going really well. If there was a good sign vs. a bad sign he always showed the good sign. June was his last chemo treatment and he came out of it entirely cancer free. Unfortunately because of the type of cancer he needed a bone marrow transplant or it would come back quickly and more aggresively. About a month and a half ago he went through 3 days of chem and two days of radiation and then had the transplant. It went perfectly. He spent a month in the hospital afterwards and did really well. All his labs looked good and he had started to actually produce his own bone marrow. He got to go home a week ago. He died thursday. They don't know why and are doing an autopsy. He had no fever, the cancer was gone, everything looked perfect! He just went to sleep wednesday night and never woke up. It just seems so ridiculous! The Dr. was shocked, he said of all his patients my friend was the one he thought was a sure cure. We were making plans to go to Disney World in a year. The worst should have been passed, it just doesn't make any sense. I've known him since high school, though we didn't start hanging out a lot until after graduation. We had nothing in common, totally different ends of every spectrum. He was a large gay man (said affectionately, it's how we used to differentiate between him and other friends with the same name), I am a small straight woman. He loved to shop, I avoid the mall like the plague. He listened to Madonna and dance music, I like punk and heavy metal. He wore only designer clothes, I wear whatever isn't dirty. We shouldn't have been best friends, but we were. I'm going to his apartment tomorrow to help his mom sort through things and get his bed and bookcases out. She thanked me for being a good friend, I thanked her for having a terrific son. I don't know how she can possibly be coping. She lost her husband only 3 months ago and now she's lost her son as well. It's going to be a long day. The memorial is friday. It's going to be a long week. |

I am so sorry for your loss. I have been there with my brother.. and know how it feels. Maybe his body was just weakened by all the treatments. Sometimes it just happens. I am sure they will find out what happened. Prayers to his family, to you, and to his other friends during this tragic time.

How terribly sad for you and his mom. It would have been bad enough, but to have had every expectation that he was recovering must make it even worse. I guess this really shows that we should let folks know that we care about them and to not take anything for granted. {{{{{{{{{{HUGE HUGS}}}}}}}}}} from VA. |

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I am scared that I will be in the same situation as yourself before I know it. My best friend throughout the years has an extremely rare form of cancer. She is one of a few people ever to have this type. At lunch one day our freshman year of highschool she just said it. I thought she was kidding. I really wish she was. But, reality is she fights for her life daily. She appreciates life more than most people ever do. She lives everyday to its fullest not knowing when it will be her last. It breaks my heart because at 20 years old her life is just beginning. I know someday I will be in your place. I pray that I have the strength to assist her parents through everything. You are a strong person and you can tell that you were an amazing friend. I'm sure he's looking down from heaven (Gay or not!) telling everyone up there how much you meant to him. You have my prayers in this time of grief. |

Very sorry for your loss. As terrible as this shock is for you and his Mom, it sounds as if he went very peacefully with no suffering. Perhaps you can take some tiny comfort in that.Again, I'm truly sorry for your loss. |

My deepest condolences to you and his mom. It really doesn't matter why you were best friends, just that you were.
