Awww, little Zuni is growing up! I really don't have any advice. I remember how nervous I was when my filly was weaned however her out of state breeder weaned her so I had no first hand part in that experience.
I always really wished I could have been there with her.I am sure little Zuni will be fine though. Are there other babies at your farm? I know that I have read it makes things a little easier if a few babies go through the weaning process at the same time, especially if the babies are friends out in a shared field prior to weaning. Sending your little pasture muffin warm & brave baby thoughts! Anna & Lorelei |

OOOOooO a stressful time for sure, LG, but you'll all get through it. If it makes you feel any better, it was a non-event for Luna.

I think it's harder on the humans. Sammy's weaning was practically a non-event. Good luck tomorrow. |

Good luck! It really isn't so bad. As Desilu said, it's definitely harder on the humans. |

HI: I weaned two yesterday and will do the last on on Wed. The mare I thought would go balistic is fine, the one I thought would go on with her day just stopped pacing this am. Babies doing fine. Both ate and acted fine last night and this AM. The one who is taking it the hardest is my Hootie (Blue Who). Moving mares around is not his cup of tea. He is in the pasture during the day, and NOT HAPPY with the mares in a different pasture. Hope everyone has a GOOOODDDD weaning time. Almost full moon. This is a good time.

It will be fine. I'm looking forward to having him here. Cabby will love having a friend even if it's only short term.

Everything went well. Yaks Mom picked Lexie up, there was a little screaming but not too bad. Zuni cried and pawed at the stall door for a bit, but then quit after about an hour. It wasn't as bad as I thought. Two other babies were also weaned today. My BM likes to wean on the "Sign." Does anybody else do that? |

La Gringa - glad it went well! Little Zuni! How is that gorgeous gal! I once had to ride in a trailer with the screaming momma - never do THAT again Many swear by the "sign" although I usually forget to check! I don't do early weaning unless there is a sound medical reason for it . 5-6 months - heck, Simone went 7 months and she is . I also believe that the babies need to be separated for a while before introduced to others - particularly a mare with a babe not used to the weaned one. Recipe for disaster! So far, so good! |

We are starting the weaning process here also with little CP as he nears 4 months. We have been turning him out each afternoon this week, with his Yearling Bro BOBCAT. Monday....
is the final NO MAMMA DAY. Then the little fellas will have to just talk about the "warm milk breaks". ![]() |
