So yesterday I take this horse Ive been riding over to this nice barn to show a pro the horse to see if they can market said horse. We will call this lady Jane. I get there and there are two other "pro's" there. These two are husband and wife. We will call them Joe and Linda. Joe and Linda supposedly sell tons of nice horses and show at the bigger shows, etc.

Well Im supposed to ride the horse for Jane. Jane says "Well since Joe is here he can go ahead and hop on her". Ok, sure, not a problem. Well its not enough that Joe and Linda are just flat out rude people and Linda is treating me like I know nothing. Joe gets on the horse, who is one of the quietest horses ever, completely unflappable, goes around and does her job, does her changes, dead honest to her fences, etc. My first thought is how on earth Joe can actually stay on a horse riding like he does. Think monkey on a horse. Joe shortens up the reins so far that horse has her poor head shoved in the air trying to get some relief from his very hard hold on her. This is a horse who hacks happily on the buckle. So Joe rides horse around and goes to do a lead change. Apparently to do a change, you swing your butt and hips completely sideways off the side of the horse, jerk your inside rein, and spur the crap out of it. Horsey didnt like this much and almost tossed Joe on the ground. I had a private snicker to myself. This horse has never bucked, ever.

Joe jumps horse around and declares he is done. Jane says for me to hop on her and just walk her around. I hop on, end up trotting, cantering, doing changes, and hoping her over some fences. Horse was perfect, completely relaxed and normal.

Well Im back in the barn waiting for the mare to dry and Joe and Linda go to ride two others. The first one threw a shoe and is dead lame, Joe rides him anyway.

Then his wife gets on another horse. Horse trots two steps, tosses its head around some, she jumps off, drags the horse in the barn, aces it, gets back on to ride it. They film the horse going around, now quietly, for a sales video. Umm????? Whats going to happen when a less experienced rider comes out to try the horse that looked calm in the video and they get there and its not calm? Maybe they will just drug it then too?

Ugh, I'll tell you what. The horse shopping adventure led me to the conclusion that other than you and 1-2 other people, a majority of the people involved with sale horses are idiots! I'd like to say it's a fluke, but I don't think it is. I saw my fair share of lame, jerked around, and (I suspect) drugged horses. How these people stay in business is beyond me! No, I know how they stay in business. They talk a good talk, and to a lot of people-- that's all that matters.

Anyway, if hoss ever gets tired ot being for sale and wants to come hang out in NJ with her brother, you let me know ;) Sorry you had a frustrating experience.

I hear you both. There seem to be so many sellers (and buyers) that are unethical and/or idiotic. You have my sympathy.

Luckily it wasnt my horse, just one Ive been riding. If it had been my horse, I would have put it back on the trailer and promptly drove home.

I was completely stunned that these people would drug a horse right in front of me, and they dont even know me.

This is why I will probably never buy an unknown horse...the barn where I take lessons was searching for some lesson horses last year and my trainer and the BO's daughter tried out a number of horses. These are women who have been riding competitively their entire lives - and on more than one occasion they were afraid to ride the horse or actually refused to ride it. Just hearing their stories, and this one is enough to scare me off from sales ads forever.

And the poor horses. There are riders who would be happy to own a horse that might be less than bombproof....but to drug the horse and have it end up with an owner who needs a bombproof mount. What a shame.

I passed on a horse that flunked the vet...

Was contacted months later by the poor adult beginner who did buy the horse. My negative PPE findings weren't disclosed and it appears the horse was drugged. Poor poor person. And poor horse! Thank good, the buyer is a GOOD person who is going to do right by the horse... but what if she wasn't?!

And this from a semi-big name trainer!!!

Yes, run, run away!

So scary. I like to think people are in this business because they love the animals and will do right by them. Why am I so naive?

The mare sounds lovely.

You know what people keep buying horses from this type of sellers and until enough people get mis-represented horses they will continue to do so... I love the trainers that sell beginer/novice adult horses that are clearly over matched with and when the horse either tries to kill said owner or finally starts quiting on them its the clients fault. Than they try to sell said lame/psycho/stopper of a horse only to buy another lame/psycho/stopper and the cycle repeats itself. :psycho:

People baffle me with how they get sucked into the used car saleman mentalati. Most the time the trainers/sellers can see them coming from a mile away!<_<

Well how about the people that come out and say they can ride and then get on and proceed to pull and yank on your tb's face. I am sure they think I lie about how good the horse is but when I ride the horse for 10 min and show him w/t/c in a lovely frame and jumping around quietly would you not be clued in that perhaps you are to blame?

I had this lady come this weekend who supposedly had been riding dressage for years...ah yeah if you call riding dressage sitting on the cantle with your legs out in front of you and pulling their head in.

I have had about 5 people come to see this horse for dressage and all of them only want to pull his head in and crank on him. He goes mostly on seat and leg and just a soft touch. I want to tell them..it's you not the horse.

Does anybody actually know how to ride tb's anymore? Can you tell I am frustrated.

No jlee, nobody really learns how to ride anymore. I think that Rodney Jenkins said "horses need to be ridden the way they like, the way that works for them" or something like that. In other words you can't ride the same way on every horse you have to adapt. Humans in general want their horses to change for them and to do it their way. If they would only listen to their horses a bit more, really listen, things would be so much happier for both horse and rider.

Forget about people ever really knowing how to ride a TB again, that takes too much time!!!
