Sorry you feel that way, but do you realize how many sites are out there where a breeder might have posted an ad? Not to mention the threads on BBs where info about the horse and its price may have been posted... If you have multiple horses for sale, are trying to get mares bred, go to shows, ride, hold down a full time job -- sometimes these things get away from you. I'm sorry you regard forgetfulness as a red flag. I, like a whole lot of other horsepeople, am human. |

The ad that I looked at for this horse was on her website. The price increased by 20% on her website overnight. Perhaps it is nothing more than coincidence rather than the fact that the more people complimented her on it than she thought she could get more money. We will never know. |

I understand the point about the overnight jump in price, but I don't really see how this connects to my sales policies; I was responding to 6#'s question about how to deal with the problem of posting an ad you forgot. (The policies section, by the way, was my own response to prospective buyers who expected a horse's price to remain the same for over a year. People seem surprised that horses' prices can and will go up with the passage of time.) Silver Bells, considering the red flag comment, I can't tell if your video request is sarcastic. I was just putting my colt forward as a kind of question. As in, How much would one expect to pay for a 2 yr old gelding who did very well in the breed shows this summer and fall, got great comments from the judges, has three fantastic gaits, and has excellent bloodlines? Wish I had an online video, but I don't. This thread is seeming more and more like an argument for NOT posting a price on a horse! I've always heard that people do like to see a price. IMHO that means the owner can change the price periodically. Regarding two year olds, a few very knowledgeable people have told me to hang on to my boy because he'll be worth more next year under saddle. This is why I'm curious about the going price of two year olds. Does anyone have more specific examples of two year olds with good movement and bloodlines who have sold? |

Any horse that is on the market for an extended period of time can be fair game for a price increase for any number of legitimate reasons. This is especially true for young horses, who may be in training, winning at shows, or growing out of a particularly ugly stage in a matter of months. Unless the owner/agent/whoever changes the price weekly or monthly in small increments (which would really seem strange to potential buyers), there will be one larger price change that may seem as though it was decided "overnight", when in fact it reflects changes that took place over a much longer period. How does a seller get around this perception without taking the horse off the market for a few months (not a very practical solution for many I think)? |

I am very serious. You are asking a question about opinions on value. Your horse is very handsome and it is very important to see more than 2 conformation shots to answer your request. And finally, I would never presume to put a value on someone else's horse. <_< BTW... the red flag comment was in reference to the "disclaimer" on price. It would make me question why someone would make this comment... why is there a chance prices could be different elsewhere. I know what I am willing to pay for a horse and what I expect for my dollar. People do like to see price. If I like a horse and I am not ready to make a purchase, I watch until it may be an option. Price changes do happen... I guess timing is everything.

We also get into the problem of being really busy and having a hard time keeping track of online ads that we've posted...we've actually quit doing as many partly for that reason...and partly because we've decided that it's not such a bad thing if the young horses stick around to be started....they've proven to be such a blast to work with. Once started they are always worth way more than before so it's hard to lose on that one. I just wish we had more space...then I could be fully overrun!!
About pricing I am curious how everyone thinks that prices should be adjusted...we also find that at some point we look at a horse and think, wow...we haven't changed that horse's price since he was a ghastly looking long yearling and now he's a knockout...and we have lots more money and time into them...so we do raise the price. And I suppose if someone was on our site the day before and the day after that they would think, wow, that horse's price went up...but I agree with watsoncrick...it's lots of little price increases that weren't done over time being added in a couple times a year. And, about the original question about pricing 2yo's. We have two very nice, well bred, hunter type 2yo geldings that are priced at $15K each right now. They are quiet, friendly and appear easy. Both have gone through little chutes and look to have fabulous jumps and have very nice hunter movement and one is out of a champion AA REG working hunter dam. I think they are well priced at that...they will be more than that once they are started. Honestly I'm tempted to not sell them at all but with a new little "two footed foal" around the house I'd be OK with less to feed over the winter and one less to start in the spring. The pics and video's of our 2yo's can be linked off of our sales page at Crestline Farm Sales Page. This is just for reference...not asking for a giant critique...if they aren't for you we respect that...just posting link to show some 2yo's for the OP to compare others to. And yes...their prices will probably go up with age barring all disasters! |

jsut because it changed doesn't mean it changed over night. it could have been posted at the old price for a month and then they decided to up it (i have done that due to show mileage) and it gets changed. the day it changes will be "overnight" but that doesn't mean the decision is overnight...justmeans at some point the website has to get updated and you happened to check it two consecutive days. |

Crestline, you have some lovely young horses that I have always admired. Your website is easy to navigate, and I agree with your pricing evaluations. Keep up the good work, and your program should be commended! NOW... <_< I must reiterate that the "horse and breeder in question" did indeed have the colt priced at $25K. He/she posted a link and even sort of bragged about him on various BB's. Positive comments and hits to this breeder's website may have influenced this breeder to jack the price up to $30K within 24 hours of her/his initial posting.... Coincidence.... we will never know. At the end of the day, if I was serious about pursuing this colt, I would address my concerns with the seller. BUT it is a "turnoff", and raises a red flag to me. By red flag I mean... whoa what's up with this price change? |

In this case, the price was literally changed overnight. The horse was just recently listed for sale both on their website & in other places. I hardly think the 20% increase was justified & it seemed to coincide with the free jumping video that was posted. The horse is a lovely mover but there is not enough jumping footage (1 fence) to form an opinion off of. |

Bottom Line... People can charge what they want when they want. We cannot put a value on someone else's horse. We can only control what we will spend and with whom we will do business with.
