Out of curiosity- I was wacthing the 2 year old U/S class at Warrenton and noticed some very nice horses. I was curious as to the price of a nice 2 year old that moves GREAT ? I am bringing a checkbook, to KY in the event any of the horses are for sale- what would you expect to pay for a horse of that caliber??? (Please don't tell my husband) I am looking for a nice horse that could eventually compete at the AAA level and be a 1st year green prospect, and eventually be a nice Adult Amateur horse? I am thinking of buying young and have my trainer make it up. I figure it has got to be less than the 3 or 4 year olds that are already going around. |

Well, I think your bottom range is going to be about 15k and your top range is going to be about 75k...does that help  If you're looking for a prospect why not wait until they are three and a little further along or shop more broadly? For example my two year old isn't doing the under saddle, just the two year old breeding class because I personally like my children to have slow starts....you're going to miss out on a lot of really nice horses if you're shopping purely out of the two year old under saddle class....many breeders avoid all the hunter breeding classes all together because they don't believe they are in the horses' overall best interests....if you're looking for talent down the line, I wouldn't limit yourself to just looking at horses doing the IHF i'd be looking at young horses from reputable people, both in the HB show world and outside of it and ones with big wins in the HB are going to have price tags to match....you can find comparably good movers outside of the show circuit that will probably be cheaper. that said, my two year old (who is a GREAT mover, but doesn't go under tack yet) is priced at 18500 (and I second Duffy--that one's a GREAT GREAT mover) |

I saw that one go at Warrenton and was afraid to ask what his price might be! I really am looking for a 2 year old that is already going u/s. I just thought the price may be less expensive than a 3 year old that has started showing o/f. My trainer and I have been looking, but just can't seem to find the right one. I have looked at a lot of filly's and have decided that I really prefer a gelding. I just don't want to have to deal with a mare. My trainer told me to check out the horses at the futurity, that many people take them there to sell. |

all i'm saying is that a 2-y-o that is nice enough to get noticed at the futurity is going to be MORE expensive than a comparable 3 year who someone hasn't invested in showing (it costs thousands and thousands to campaign on the line unless you do it all yourself). You can probably find a gorgeous 3 year old that isn't showing for half of an eye catching futurity winner....just my $0.02 but if you do have the pocketbook for it ....BUY SOX ON THE BEACH (if he's for sale). and most 3 y o in this day and age of warmbloods, aren't really showing much O/F |

I agree that a number of breeders do not show 2 YOs us in the best long term interest of the horse. My 2 YO just went to his first in hand show this weekend and did very well. Standing around talking to some other 2 YO owners at the ingate we were discussing this very thing. A couple of the 2 YOs were hacking out under saddle. One is just being backed now..my gelding will be backed in October. What I am willing to do with my 2 YO gelding personally is get him going at a walk/trot lightly under saddle then throw him back out for the winter to grow up. Different breeders will have varied opinions on the subject. I err on the side of caution. The OP is correct though that my dude's price as a backed 2 YO that is just starting to show is going to be a lot less than if he is going well under saddle next year at 3. |

Ditto all above - my 2 year old just got sent to be backed and I sure as heck will not be "showing" her over fences as a 3 year old! Yipes - some babes do okay with the early steps in their career, but it's not for me nor my trainer. Why I did not and do not nominate my babies for the IHF. There are some great young hunter classes for 4 year olds and if mine are ready for any of that, I will shoot for those and baby green at end of their four year old years. Oh and young jumper classes for the beeg boy! JMHO |

I figured as much...which is back to my original point....people invest a lot emotionally, financially, aspirationally and chronologically in the ones you see out showing...which has made this one....priceless! (I'd keep him too, and under lock and key, were he mine) |

If you do not mind a trip to York Pa, Linda and Brad Phiel (717-757-3189) have a barn and pasture full of really top hunter-jumper bred nice youngsters- most started or ready to be started. They are by Alla czar, All the Gold, brooke front Coconut Grove, Special Memories....and more (I've forgotten). They have bred the IHF two year old hack winner and another one they bred placed well down at warrenton (owned by Market Street) (santorini?) I think they are reasonably priced! (Plus they are really nice people.) |

I was surprised to hear the US shows horses under saddle as young as 2yo..only realised this a few weeks ago looking at show photos. We don't have any classes for 3yo's and under unless it's in hand. Everything ridden has to be 4yo or older. Congrats to those that wait until they mature

Primarily the hunters have 2 YO u/s classes. It's something I personally disagree with though. Mine MAY be backed as a late 2 YO if they are mature for their age (this year's 2 YO is a hefty built 16H already so I don't want him any bigger before I clamber up there the first time!) but if they are immature I even wait til 3. No one does much u/s til 3 and no jumping til 4. At 2 my gelding will only do in hand stuff. There is one other Boomer colt out there showing this year and his owner is a hunter rider and she IS doing the APHA 2 YO HUS stuff with him. I disagree with it but hope they do well. Anyway...back to the original question. I agree that the number of horses the OP will find going well under saddle may be limited as a 2 YO for the above reasons, but as to the price of a greenie 2 (to 3) year old you are probably looking at a starting point of 15K for a quality youngster. You will likely pay towards the lower end from a breeder and higher end from a show barn. |

NJ Gal, I don't know if you were at Devon this year, but the filly who won her class at Devon this year, 2yrold TB filly Romantic Pursuit, handled by Junior Johnson, is for sale by her breeder. This filly has won consistently on the line against the WBs up here in Canada, including Junior Champion Filly at the Royal Winter Fair. This is a gorgeous filly, super fancy, flashy and very well handled. Her owner does a wonderful job of starting them (I have a filly with her right now). I think the price for Julia/Romantic Pursuit is very reasonable for a filly of her calibre. Please have a look at her website: www.braecreststables.com The two year old is Romanctic Pursuit. Exceptional filly and should make an outstanding hunter. She is by A Fine Romance who was a hunter Champion himself. While you're looking at Claire's website, please take a look at my filly: Bittersweet aka Tea. She is 4, and going very well U/S. This is a filly we have the highest hopes for. Congrats camohn on your boy's show on Sunday!!

Great website, Fred! Love the statement at the top about bridging the gap between breeders and buyers(?). Fred's relatives are truly lovely!
