Thread Announcement: Boys, go away. You really don't want to get involved in this thread. Truly.

OK, so has anyone else pushing into those menopausal years experienced suddenly abnormal and horrible periods?

I have always had very light, hardly noticable periods. I always attributed a lot of my pain free existence to riding - strong abs keep us cramp free. Seems logical, anyway...maybe I've just been lucky.

But all of a sudden - whammo :mallet: - every few months I'm getting the periods from hell. I was at a horse show this weekend. Aunt Flo shows up Friday just before I left. Great timing...but figured I'd just grip and deal as usual.

But it wasn't just Aunt Flo - Mizz Scarlet, Bloody Mary, Aunt Ruby and Cousin Tom showed up too. TMI Alert: We are talking using up a super maxi pad AND a super maxi tampon every 45 minutes. Doubled over in cramps. Wanting a heating pad and a hot toddy.

Needless to say, this did not make for a delightful horse show experience.

Anyone else going through this - how are you dealing - especially with showing?

Thanks, DQ. I figured since it only happens every few months it wasn't a big deal.

MGP, aren't you glad you were at MY show, where we keep all manner of feminie supplies in the port-o-pot? :innocent:

Seriously, though, you could easily have a fibroid causing all that bleeding. That's why I got all my parts ripped out about 18 months ago, and I wax eloquent about the lack of a period at the drop of a hat. I had my one remaining ovary removed as well and got put on the estrogen patch. It's dreamy--no mood swings, no cramps, nuthin'. I highly recommend it. :cloud9:

Oh, wow - that's something I will definitely bring up with my doc. Fibroids never even occurred to me.

I would so love not to have to deal with a period evey month...but I'm not thrilled about the idea of HRT.

OMG I love the 7 dwarfs of menopause! Not there yet but I already have a few of those.... <_<

MGP, could be fibroids but I've also heard from some of my friends that what you're describing isn't uncommon just because of the changes in hormones as you get older -- some months more hormones, some months less....it makes some sense if you consider how hormones work together to build up the uterine lining on a normal month.....when things get wacky you could have more or less lining to shed. Oh the wonders of womanhood. :brickwall:

Although it could be very normal, I'd still mention it to your gyn just so they can let you know how to proceed. One friend of mine actually went on birth control pills just to keep the bleeding under control until she could figure out a long-term plan (how mad was she? 3 kids and a dh with a vasectomy and she's on the pill). I *think* she ended up having uterine ablation (think that's what it's called) which is a simpler alternative to hysterectomy in some cases. Certainly there are lots of options, so worth mentioning it to your doc so you don't have to suffer.

If nothing else, at least you have all of our sympathy.  Good luck!

It's not necessarily menopausal - we all experience changes in our monthlies as time goes by...

Good info there - I started having problems similar to yours, and an ultrasound and blood tests proved nothing really wrong, so my OBGYN put me back on the pill, and now I barely have my period. Hallelujah. :cheer:

I've been having similar problems -- wearing MEGA SUPER DUPER tampons -- sometimes two at a time and having to swap them out every 1/2 hr.

I went to my Dr and told her I wanted whatever pill is out there that will stop it altogether. We got to talking about the prob and she had me get a transvaginal sonogram. That revealed a cyst and a thickening of the endometrial wall. The cyst is likely benign but by it being there, it pisses everything off, causing the heavy bleeding.

I have a really good friend, also a horse woman, who went thru some horrifying stuff over the last year or so. She went to a team at George Washington University and they got her all fixed up.

Since there is a high occurrence of cancer on the maternal side of my family, I want good people in there -- so, that's where I'm going on Oct. 1. They'll likely remove that cyst but I want to make sure they'll be in there looking for anything else suspicious while they're in there.

I'm now post-menopausal, thanks to Premature Ovarian Failure, but I had wildly erratic periods starting that whole ordeal. i only had a few days of really heavy bleeding, but I did have several months of having periods that lasted 6-7 days, 3-4 days off and then another 6-7 day period. That was really fun  Then when I started HRT it was just like reliving puberty.

Gosh, ain't it just swell being a girl?
