Grace had a biopsy this morning of her lower eye lid - what we thought was a bug bite that would not heal kept getting bigger and more solid so the vet took a biopsy.

We have about a week to wait for results

Please tell me your experiences.

Thank you

Never had a horse that required a biopsy, so I'm of no use there. However I do want to let you know I am hoping it's nothing and that the outcome is good. :luck:

Luckily, none of my personal horses have had bx but being an LVT in internal med for 7+yrs, I have a ton of experience with bxs.

We usually got our results in 72 business hours, over a weekend holiday would make it longer.

How old is your horse? What color? How long had the mass been there, how quickly did it grow? Did they just take a piece of it, or did they remove the whole thing, how much of the eyelid did/does it take up? Was/is it rubbing on your horses eye?

JINGLES that it is nothing and if it is something, there are some available treatments...

My horse is liver chestnut, 9 yr old TWH mare.

4 weeks ago I called the vet out for the eye because it seemed to be membrane covered - I could not clear the membrane and she was winking and rolling her eye to get it off. By time vet arrived she had cleared out the membrane. The Vet stained the eye and looked for any issues, gave me a tube of triple antibiotic and left.

The lump appeared in the next week - first just a swelling in the lower lid, then a pea shaped nub that she rubbed raw. I had the vet come back out - assumed bug bite and put some SWAT on it.

Then with fall shots had vet look again - and that was when she decided a biop was in order. The biop was of the swelling around the pea shape, not the pea shape its self.

Good quesitons, BF!!

Okay, I breathed a second and here is what I know:

My horse's cancer test came back positive. :(

I am going to do some more research, but it sounds like what we do next is an injectable form of chemo, to the area below her eye.

It can be treated at home - and treatment will occur 1 to 3 times and will take a while to see the results.

It is NOT the kind of cancer that causes death.

I t is not the kind of cancer that metasticizes.

Comeon now, help me learn more about this please.

DQ I'm so sorry - Though the treatment sounds promising. I know you are worried.

I don't know anymore about it or what to do or have any experience with it but just wanted to send my best wishes to you and Grace.

Thank you Seal.

Ilook up stuff on Google and calm - then find scarey stuff and panic. Then got an email from pal -her horse had one and did Regressin and is fine. Another just emailed and said a show horse she knew was euthanized when the treatment went wrong. :brickwall: :,(

I feel the emotional roller coaster coming on. :censored:

Here is the report as written:

Diagnosis:
Nodular and sessile equine sarcoid

Coments:
Equine sarcoids are generally classified as mesenchymal neoplasms and are frequently recurrent following attemps at surgical excision. Metastases have not been reported. Complete excision of the mass in this case could not be confirmed historically. As such, monitoring f the surgical site and adjacent tissue for further alterations is recommended.

In English I have found this to mean: cancerous, can come back with treatment. BUT this cancer does not wander around and show up elsewhere. It may come back even after treatments or removal.

It takes too much of her eyelid to remove it.

Regressin is a drug - immunotherapy.

Still researching. :sigh: :,(

DQ -- So sorry to hear the diagnosis. But from what I know, this is VERY treatable. A close friend of mine has a horse who was diagnosed with a sarcoma above the eyelid several years ago. It was removed at a vet clinic, and they inserted a chemo bead into the tumor site. The main concern at the time was whether it had metasticized to the bone, but scans determined that it had not. She kept vigilant watch over it, and a couple of years after the original surgery she noticed a new growth in the same area, and biopsy determined it was carcinoma again, with no metastacis. This time I think they did a slightly different surgical procedure, although I'm not sure what (there was some question of whether the vet who did the first procedure did it properly), and they again inserted a chemo bead. But bottom line is that the horse is fine, his vision is fine, and the post-surgery care is pretty straight forward. The main thing is you'll need to stay vigilant in checking on whether it comes back. Good luck, and let me know if you'd like me to get more info. from my friend as to what type of surgery was done each time.

Delia - thank you thank you and YES more info please. The more I read the more it seems this is a 'keep vigilant' kind of thing and after treatment it may go and never return or return again and again.

Any info from someone who has gone through this would be helpful!

My email is: klinet@michigan.gov

Thank you!!
