Show me pictures of your tattoo(s)!

I love tattoos and I love hearing the stories behind them.

I've always wanted one, and I feel like right now is the perfect time to get one. I'm at a big turning point in my life, and I want to express it with a tattoo. Horses have been a monumental part of my life for over half of my lifetime, and I want it to represent that.
I want a horseshoe, but I'm not sure how to dress it up... I want it to be more than just a horseshoe. Any creative minds have ideas?

I want it in the middle of my upper back, between my shoulder blades, and not tiny but not huge. Thanks in advance!

There was a post on COTH a while back where people posted some cool ones. I really like the ones that look like a line drawing of a horse.

DO NOT get one that my step-daughter just got. She got an outline of the state of Illinois. On her neck. It looks ridiculous...like someone drew it on her with a sharpie.

(Yes, this is the same child about whom I posted a thread titled something like 'help, my stepdaughter got her nose pierced...like a bull.')

One of our trainers showed me a small tattoo on her back she had done 20 years ago. I said 'oh, what is that?' and she said 'Exactly!'. It used to be a unicorn with small stars all around it, but it smeared over time and now you can't tell what it is.

Someone suggested getting it done in henna first to make sure you love it. I thought that was a good idea.

(I'm really sorry...I just re-read this and I totally sound like Debby Downer. I hope you have a fun time picking one out and that you LOVE it when it's done.)

I really need to get a better pic of this tattoo someday. It looks much better in person (and not all blurry, lol).

My tattoo artist took this piece of jewelry...

and made this tattoo...

I'm also looking to add another horse tattoo. Right now my back is completely family devoted. My left shoulder blade has my very first tattoo, a crow (me). The upper middle of my back has an alchemy symbol that I share with my brother (his is on his arm). My son's name and birthdate go across my back and underneath that is a take on the celtic tree of life. Under the tree is my daughters name and birthdate.

On my lower back I want to incorporate two things, something from each of my parents and a horse. I was thinking of doing something with the flowers that represent my parent's birth months and have them sort of make up a field the horse is in. I didn't just want the horse standing in the field but I can't think of many good alternatives (no rearing either, lol). My boyfriend suggested the horse rolling but I think to many people would think I had a dead horse on my back, hehe.

After that all I need is to come up with something on my right shoulderblade that represents family love to me and my back will finally be done, woohoo!

This is my back before the alchemy symbol...

It's shiny because I took the pic right after I got home and it's still got the goop that goes on just finished tattoos.

I love tattoos! If carefully thought out and meaningful I think they are a wonderful thing to do.

Right now I have two, a lower back tribal butterfly that I drew. It is about 10 years old and still looks pretty good, but I'm careful to put sun block on it should it ever be exposed outdoors or in the tanning bed. I'll try to get my BF to take a picture of it. The other one I got this past April, 3 colored stars up the side of my leg which is for my greyhound that passed away in April, Starlight Jamie. :(

I've also been wanting a horse related tattoo, something like two horses jumping over my hips that come out of my other lower back tattoo. I just haven't been able to find an idea that I like and so the search goes on...

There's one on tattoojohnny that I absolutely love. It's the first one that comes up when you search for 'horse'. It's a line swirly line drawing thing. I've always wanted a tattoo and a horse seems to be the most appropriate for me...'cept I had never seen a horse one that I would want on me....'til I saw that one, that is.

Now, the only reason I hesitate is that I don't want to be one of hundreds of people with the same tattoo. Seems silly to get something many others might have.

I also contemplated the chinese symbols for 'horseman'. That would incorporate a few passions of mine in one tat and isn't quite so blatant.

Oh Starlight, I'm so sorry about your Hound! My screen name, "Jill", is in honor of my girl who died 6 years ago (exactly two weeks before 9/11). THey're such awesome doggies. We had a male as well that passed in December of the same year.

Awesome tattoos everyone. I wish I were more brave. I'd probably be covered.

don't know if its true or not but in conversations with (Truman) Capote, he indicates that 80% of multiple murderers have tattoos....i prefer not to clue in the POlice. :innocent:

In all seriousness have several friends who are tat artists and even more who have tattoos....not for me but i don't like people telling me how to display art and I give others the same courtesy. wow that hurt to type with the darn "lobster claw" cast.

I love my tattoos. I have three (unfortunately no pics of them, though...)

My first one is a small pink heart on my left hip. This one is for my mom. She's the one who got me interested in tattoos and is slowly becoming a tattooed old lady :-). She's my heart, so she's always with me.

My second one is a set of four horse shoes going up my back, just to the right of my spine. I wanted something horsey and I wanted it to be meaningful to me. I have a shoe from my large pony gelding, who will always be my most special horse. I took that shoe to my tattooer and he used that as his model, down to the little shoe nails & caulk holes. Each shoe is a different bright color (pink, teal, blue, and purple), which happen to correspond to the halters each one of my critters wore when I had them.

My last one is a butterfly on the inside of my left ankle. After I got my horseshoes, I sort of felt lopsided...I had a big piece of art on my right side and one tiny heart on my left and just felt tilted right and off balance(I know...totaly bizarre). I wanted something on my left side to balance me and ground me. So now I'm all balanced and together and I'm done. I don't think I'll get another tattoo at this point because I feel complete.

I know what you mean by balance, I have a smallish tattoo inside of my right hip and my next one is going to be on my left shoulder or left forearm.

The one I have now is the belgian warmblood brand modified a bit and done in royal blue. It's about two inches in diameter. I love it.

I'm not sure what's next but I want another!

Tattoos may prevent you from getting an MRI (or an effective MRI anyway). So I'd avoid tattooing any limb or area you'd be interested in saving in the event of a tumor, major injury, etc.

When my sister fell and hit her head and got a concussion-- I was very glad that they were able to whisk her in for an MRI immediately. She has just piercings, no tattoos. Out came the piercings and into the MRI she went. She was okay, thank god. I was so glad she wasn't limited in her medical treatment because she had a tattoo!

I don't really mind body art etc. but I'd never want to do something for the sake of appearance that could seriously affect my health down the line.

The tattoo/MRI thing only applies to certain colors and only certain types of ink that might have iron oxide in them. There are plenty of types of inks out there that don't contain any metal.

If it's a worry just ask your tattoo artist what sort of inks they use. If it's a good artist they should be able to tell you if they contain iron oxide or not and find you an alternative if they do (you can get every color in an iron oxide free version, even red).

The biggest issue for that is generally tattoos from 20+ years ago (before ink started to become regulated) and tattoos done without proper ink (prison tats).

Yes, it's true that not all inks are implicated in the MRI issue-- just ones with traces of metal. Assuming your tattooer is experienced enough to know the difference and advise properly, my worry is that even if you didn't have that kind of tattoo-- if you arrive in the emergency room unconscious (like my sister)-- they might see the tattoo and hesitate to give you an MRI-- even if you don't have metal in your tattoo.

I think tattoos can be beautiful, I just don't think it's worth taking a chance with something that might impact a medical decision years down the line.

Eh, I don't know, I haven't talked with any MRI techs or doctors but from all the reading I've done it seems that there haven't been any cases of permanent damage to people (though I have heard of tattoos getting ruined). The biggest issue seems to be in some rare cases people can get a burning sensation and some swelling. My guess would be that if you are already unconcious they aren't going to worry about either of those things.

This is what the FDA has to say about tattoos and MRIs.

Quote:

-MRI complications. There have been reports of people with tattoos or permanent makeup who experienced swelling or burning in the affected areas when they underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This seems to occur only rarely and apparently without lasting effects.

There also have been reports of tattoo pigments interfering with the quality of the image. This seems to occur mainly when a person with permanent eyeliner undergoes MRI of the eyes. Mascara may produce a similar effect. The difference is that mascara is easily removable.

The cause of these complications is uncertain. Some have theorized that they result from an interaction with the metallic components of some pigments.

So don't get permanent eyeliner and it seems you should be just fine.
