Yesterday I was having a GREAT
ride on my horse when all of the sudden he took a bad step. He didn't trip, stumble nothing just a bad step. Afterward he would not put his left front foot back down for several minutes. I got off immediately loosened his girth and started slowly walking him back to the barn. He was severely limping. By the time we got to the barn he was putting it down. I rinsed him off, washed his legs and cold hosed it for 15 minutes. The whole time he stood with his weight on his right front. He walked "ok" to his stall, I wrapped both front legs. I couldn't find any heat or swelling but near his hoof on the outside of his pastern joint was on fire. PLEASE TELL ME HE DID NOT BREAK ANYTHING!!!!!! My horse is a tough S.O.B. he does not show pain. So I am really concerned because of how bad he was hurting. I am waiting for my trainer to look at him today and let me know how he is. I am hoping for fine, but it is hard to optimistic with my luck of late. ![]() Please send hopeful thoughts Petie's way. |

My trainer called at lunch time. She said he appears to be walking ok. They did not trot him. She pulled the wraps to see if anything blows up. If he is fine she will turn him out tomorrow. I am not one to panic, and she knows that. I told her last night I was convinced when it happened it was broken by his reaction. If he is lame tomorrow at the trot. I may get x rays to be safe. I know they are expensive, but no one was there but me. I know how he reacted. He may be trying to 'tough it out'. I feel so much better after her call. I am still concerned until I swing my leg over him again. |

I went out to the barn tonight. Saw my trainer as she was leaving. She said he was still off. We left the wraps off, nothing "blew up" so she suggested soaking his foot, and if he is still sore over the weekend, her husband (our farrier) will pull the shoe and take a look. Well I brushed him, felt his legs. Nothing, nada, zippo. So I put him on the lunge for a moment to see for myself. To the left, he was SOUND!!!! WOO HOO, I got a strong trot, asked him to canter back to trot, not a hitch. Then I went to the right...he could not even trot, he was LAME!!!!! On the left front (only to the right) Have any of you ever heard of this? Completely sound one direction, completely lame the other? I am so perplexed. If he isn't improved by Sunday I think I want x-rays just to be sure... I certainly can not afford them, but it is better to know. I did soak his foot, I figure it certainly cannot hurt, but I really don't feel his recently (2 week old) shod feet are the problem. His shoe looks perfectly fine. I am desperate for any thoughts. What do you all think? |

Well today is x-ray day. I will FINALLY find out (I hope) what is up. I spoke to the vet the other day on another issue (over the phone) and brought up Petie. He asked how he hurt himself and I told him my fear of a fractured coffin bone. He said it might be his suspensory. I really like this vet, he is very good, but have you EVER seen a suspesory injury so acute he can't put his leg down without heat or swelling???? I hope he is right because the lay up time is shorter. However, I had a suspensory talk with one of our barn kids. She is leasing a horse with a history of suspensory issues. I was showing her how to palpate the leg for the suspensory, she was on her horse me on Pete. I pinched and he didn't flinch. I WANT MY BOY TO BE ALL BETTER!!!

Good luck with the x-rays - I'll be curious to hear what the vet finds. Hopefully something easy to fix! |

I'm late to the thread, too. Jingling for Petie. We have a Petey at our barn and he's just the sweetest horse. Any news on the x-rays? |

FRUSTRATION!!!!! Ok please let me know if I am overreacting. Vet came out on Friday, Pete was in the round pen they looked at him said he looked "ok". He asked my trainer "does she really want to pay for x-rays?" trainer's reply "no" so they didn't take any ARGH!!!!!! Now my trainer is a long time friend. She knows I am not a typical horse owner, meaning I don't have money. I have not shown in 4 years and technically Pete is for sale, I am supposed to be quitting. So my trainer was really trying to look out for my best interest, but I have one question WHAT HORSE ARE YOU LOOKING AT!!!! Every time I longe Petie he absolutely can not trot to the right? I was in tears on Friday, I was so looking forward to an answer. My trainer said " he can come back on Mon if you want him to". So how is 3 barn trip charges saving me money I ask! sigh I allowed myself the weekend to calm down, I was upset, not angry but very frustrated. I went out yesterday and he was limping again. So I went out and talked to my trainer. I told her I have to know, I have to be proven wrong. I think if she had seen the incident she would have had the xray machine out the day after it happened. She tends to try to down play things, because in truth as we all know, most just need time. Maybe this does too, but if it is a fracture I think we should be handling him differently. I am not sure he should be turned out at all, he is only going in a round pen so he can't run around, and perhaps a bar shoe or something? I hope I am wrong, I just have a really bad feeling on this one, I don't get these often. But my feelings have been right in the past.
I am interested in your opinion. I have never heard or seen a soft tissue injury that didn't show itself. What do you think it could be? My horses legs are as tight as a young'un, and there is not one iota of heat ANYWHERE (not even his feet). If it were a suspensory injury I would expect the area to be squishy, warm and tender to the touch. It is not. I have poked, proded, picked, squeezed, everything. He just limps. Well today he 'should' be x-rayed. If it doesn't happen, I think I will break. I probably will leave a message on my trainers phone, "call me when he is sound" and not go back. I don't think I can handle it. Thank you for allowing me to 'vent'. |

I think you are very worried about Petey and it is comingout in anger and frustration. TAke a deep breath, hug Petey and wait on todays results. I know its hard - I am waiting on biopsy results - but you can do it!!
