I had a 3 year old, 17 hand goof ball that I did not have time to work with on a consistant basis. Applesauce recommended a "cowboy" guy to me and I just got my baby back from him. WOW!!! He is a gentle giant now! The guy did a GREAT job!!! I took this baby to a show over the weekend. Of course, as I am walking in the ring I realize that he's never walk, trotted or cantered in a group before... I think "oh sh!t... WTF and I doing?".... He was a STAR!!! Trotted and cantered with 11 other horses and did not bat an eye! He got all his leads and never looked at a thing! Also, when I got there, I put the bridle on in the trailer and unloaded him. I tacked him up (all by myself!!) and he only moved 1x!!! Not sure what this guy did, but this horse stands like a statue and is just SOO easy to deal with!!! Maybe it had something to do with him moving cattle with him?? I dunno. I am happy to share his name/number with anyone who is interested. I just can't tell you how happy I am with my horse!!!! |

Assuming a young horse is not especially tough and stays healthy -what can one expect a professional to get done in 60-90 days? Thanks |

With my guy... I had a saddle on him and had been on him over a dozen times at the walk and done some round pen work. This was over the course of 6 months! I finally realized that the horse would die before I had him cantering and sent him away. He was gone 60 days... he now WTC in the ring or in a field (even in a field with my horses cantering right along with us). Gets his leads, backs, turns on haunches, stands, ties, leg yields and I swear you could set off a bomb next to him and he would not move! This is what I got and I told the guy to go very slowly because of a bone problem he had when he was born. Another small mommy brag... I took him to a show this weekend and it was very windy with a chill in the air. He went around on a loopy rein and got nice prizes! I was happily surprised!!

Thanks. I just brought two home Saturday and got on them for the first time Sunday. One filly was with one fellow that took 3 months before he got on her. As it looked like a 6-8 month project with him-I took her to someone else for another 30 days (her fourth month) thinking he would at least get her trotting under saddle. She does not steer at all and barely goes forward. (I especially can't understand the no steering as the first fellow long-lined her for 3 months --but obviously only in a round pen!?) The other young horse the second fellow had for almost 3 months and she is not any better-does not steer and no concept of going forward. (Another one that must have just been ridden in a round pen?!) At least someone has been on them first but as nothing has been asked of them who knows if they can buck!?! I just hope I can get them trotting and steering under saddle before the ground freezes.(And I thought i was too old for this.....that is why I sent them out to be "broken.") |

Any recommendations - or do any of those already recommended - for someone to take on a basically unhandled, pushy coming 3yo? She's TB, and just over 16 hands at this point - and I just don't have the time to do it. If she had been handled and had respect for space, it would be a totally different story. I just need manners, respect, and w/t. However long it takes, I'm not in a hurry as she will be bred next year, so no shows to aim for. South or western VA, eastern TN, or west of Raleigh NC areas... |
