I have two 2-year old colts who need to be started, although one is still very immature physically and can wait several months yet.

Can anybody offer a recommendation for a trainer who starts babies nicely? I just want them going walk-trot, go forward, stop, steer a little. Preferably in Virginia.

Thanks!!

I would recommend Carlos (can't remember his last name). He's South American, but rides at Blue Ridge Farm in Upperville. Contact Patricia Ramey at huntridgestables@aol.com for his telephone number. He's EXCELLENT with the young ones (from babies on up).

I would also strongly recommend going with Olin - he is the best! He did a great job with my horse and even though I'm in Chicago now, I'm thinking about sending my baby to him when she's ready.

My 2 year old goes down to Southern Pines on Saturday. Diana Hoberecht. Heard nothing but the highest praise for her. I will let you know! I can't wait!
Certainly SP is great soil for babies.

If you want to go a solid, but less expensive route than Olin, I reccomend Anna (I can't remember her last name!) She is Matt Gonzales' (awesome farrier) niece. I have had the pleasure of watching her with several babies, and thought she was really good. She is a "cowboy", but in the good sense, not the bad. The horses I saw her breaking were skittery TBs, and for the month I was at her barn, the progress they made was remarkable. I break my own babies, but if I had to send one somewhere, I would choose her in a minute! Her barn is in Nokesville, but she also travels.
I believe you can reach her at 703-730-6462 - Matts house.

She has a farm that she takes customers at in Nokesville - the old Tralee' place. I think it's called Criswood 2, now. I spent last winter at Cedar Run (indoor), and she had a number of horses she was working with there. That barn is close to where she lives, so she worked with those babies after hours, when the ring was pretty empty. I usually rode after my hubby got off work and could watch the hellions... I mean my little darlings. As such, I got to watch her several times a week, for 3 months. I liked what I saw.

I am also just talking about your basic backing; walk, trot, canter, manners, confidence, etc... If you want to get them ready for their baby green/pre-green season - that's a different can of apples.!

Thanks, KarynZ. That's exactly what I'm looking for. I plan on doing one of my colts, but the huge monster with the "take on the world" attitude I'll leave to the pro.
