Well - Sammy has somehow managed to break his lateral sesamoid bone! What was at first thought to be a heel bruise (we have that too) is a lovely chip at the top of his outside sesamoid bone. It's possible that he will do well with arthroscopic surgery to remove the chip or else we play the wrap and wait game. Either way, he is stall bound indefinitely. We are getting more XRays and then we let the surgeon decide whether he will have an easier recuperation and future soundness with or without surgery. Either way, I do believe he has a good prognosis, just a yucky recovery period of confinement. He somehow knew we had his gelding procedure scheduled for next week and has figured out a successful way to get out of that! :argh:

But, he is officially weaned and both mom and son are hardly missing each other. A few calls yesterday, much less today but no frantic searching by either one. I think Mom is wondering what the heck happened to her grain much more than where her child went.

Give me strength to cope with an ungelded colt confined to a small space for who knows how long. :sigh: :shoot:

:( Oh no Desilu! Lots & lots of jingles for Sammy! Babies heal amazingly well & I am sure Sammy will be just fine in no time with or without surgery, whatever you decide. Lots of good thoughts that you get through stall rest & maybe a few margaritas too. ;) :innocent:

Desilu - I am so sorry to hear about Sammy. I am sure that with a little rest time he will be running with the best of them. Just tell Sammy that his buddy Duke needs him to chill out for a bit so that he will recover faster. However, if nothing else works, I second Stacey's suggestion of Margaritas.

Thanks guys.........Sammy is making the most of his stall time by stealing kisses from all the barn ladies.............

We'll repeat a full round of XRays tomorrow, overnight them to the surgeon in Ocala then see what the verdict is............surgery or no surgery. He is doing much better and the wraps seem to be doing their job at supporting the leg. I just dread trailering him for 2 hrs in this heat......it hasn't even been cooling off at night right now. But, we will do what we must and figure it out.

He is such a people kind of guy and so far, has been scarfing up all the extra attention. So I'm sure that has helped. The Sammy toll must be paid, scratches, treat,s nose kisses.........something or else he will make faces and want to know the reason why! Forget actually tacking up and grooming your own horse! Thank goodness he is level headed and has as much manners as any 4 month old could be expected to have.

Thanks for all the jingles.........keep em up please. :luck:

I will keep jingling for Sammy. I really hope the xrays show improvement and no surgery for the little guy.
It is so nice he has such a fan club to keep him occupied during his healing.
Long distance hugs and nose kisses for Sammy.
