You get yourself a Farmer's Almanac and in it for each month it should tell you what the best dates for weaning are. I can't remember off hand the position of the moon, but it relates to which part of the body the moon is in. Anyway, it worked well for me. Give it a go.

I'm not weaning for a while :P

Babies are still too young. It's just that everyone is asking and I thought I'd give it a try. I figure end of sept of the pony filly and after Christmas for the TB filly. The mares weren't bred back so I don't feel rushed. ;)

WOW, Christmas time..

His inspection is on the 30th of September..and on October 1 I want to wean, and then I guess the next week I'll geld him..or the other way around..whichever is less stressful on him

His momma will be happy to get rid of him..he's a March baby..so she's ready NOW.. :teehee:

Thanks Norsire...

Does it mention when to geld???? It looks like I'll wait until the end of the month to wean..I'd love to geld him before that then...

I'm gonna have to get a 2005 almanac to see if I weaned my other one at the "right time".. :teehee:

Geld him & then wean a few weeks or a month later. It is MUCH easier done while still on Mom.

Definitely geld first if you can. If not, wait a good enough amount of time after weaning to geld. We have done both with good results.

Using the same signs as the weaning signs, you can geld.

VABred so the same days as weaning are also the best days for gelding?

I weaned one last night and it went very, very smoothly...for both the mare and foal.

I will be weaning two more the end of August on the feet days.
