I stopped by a farmstand today and got a few ears of corn. As I was shucking the corn (that sounds so funny!) I was wondering if it would be ok to feed the husks as a treat.

I seem to remember as a kid we'd give our horses the left over corn cobs after we'd eaten them. Were we really weird back then, or is that ok?

What are some fun treats that you feed your horses?

(I didn't put this in The Feed Room because it seems there's not much traffic there. Mods, sorry if that was a bad idea.)

Bear like strawberries. I'm going to take him out a salad next time I go.

Ok, at first I read this as "BEARS" love strawberries. And I was thinking - my how brave you are to feed the bears! :shoot:

I'm pretty boring when it comes to horse treats - cookies and carrots, mostly.

Yes, horses can eat corn husks. The question is, is it healthy?

Tip will eat absolutely anything- including, to Madame Trainer's amazement, bute tabs right out of my hand. Also Tums, like they're candy, and very nearly Aleve (he got all my Tums out of my hand, but knocked the Aleve off, thankfully. He didn't need it.) He loves watermelon and bananas and grapes, when he can get them. He has also eaten various types of nachos and potato chips and has sampled just about every type of lunchmeat in sandwiches, thanks to pony camp kids who ate while "petting the friendly horsey." (Tip is very good at sharing. If it comes within his reach, it isn't wanted anymore, and he will share it to keep it from going to waste.) He likes Cheerios although he prefers something with more flavor, like Corn Pops, and he is a big fan of oatmeal-raisin cookies and Oatmeal Creme Pies.

Basically, my horse could be substituted for a trash bin in the kitchen, and he'd be very satisfied. But he is on a diet (gee, I wonder why) and right now, he can have carrots or fruit. This is fine by him, as to judge by his reaction, carrots are pony crack.

The only concern I can think of is mycotoxicosis from the mold that can grow on corn ears and husks. Like Renn/aissance, I am not shy about giving my horse most things, but I might pause about corn husks because of the mold concern.

Oh, it's not that I'm not shy about giving Tip food; I actually am. He's not shy about taking it!
