Here's the scenerio. I advertised my horse for sale online with a video. Yesterday I had a lady call me that is interested in him and once I answered questions she was still interested enough to share the video with her trainer. Her trainer watched the video, likes the horse and recognized MY trainer that was riding my horse in the video. So HER trainer called MY trainer to ask him his thoughts on him. My trainer said, nice horse go try him. So they are coming today. If (let's think positive here) they like the horse enough to buy him do I owe my trainer any sort of commission for putting in a good word on him? He already gets paid for the rides on my horse plus got paid for riding him while I made the video. My trainer will NOT be able to be here today while the people are here to try him. I know the norm is 10% in selling a horse but other than basically saying that yes, the horse is fairly represented and they should go try him is he still owed a commission and if so, how much? Thanks! |

I'd wait to see how the transaction unfolds. If Mr. Trainer is needed to help negotiate, answer any further questions, be present at prepurchase vetting to make sure the deal doesn't go sour, etc. then in my humble opinion, he'd be entitled to a commission. Did Mr. Trainer help you set a fair asking price? Since the buyer's trainer called your trainer for his opinion ... It appears he has a respected reputation and his peers value his opinion. Out of good conscience, if your trainer's positive comments are what encouraged the buyer to proceed ... even if your trainer has no further involvement... I'd pay him something, even if it was a nice dinner out. (10% is a good deal... most of the trainers I've worked with charge 12 - 15%) (side note... if your trainer is who I think he is ... he's a good honest guy and I'd trust his opinion too... even though I just lost a $100 bet to him
. For fear of losing another bet, I'd be willing to guess that if you asked him if you owed him anything, he'd say no)

Thanks Touchstone. What you said makes good sense. Sounds like you do know who my trainer is since he is just the type to make bets with people...and he usually DOES win, dammit! Initials are JB. He's going out of town today to Europe on a buying trip so anything that transpires after today will not involve him. He did tell me what to price my horse at though. |

Quite simply....NO Commission is warrented here. However a nice Dinner out , or possible Bonus for their recomendation after the fact, would be fantastic. You-yourself advertised, and found the Client. If the "prospective buyer wishes to involve her Trainer also", those costs should also be borne by herself. |

Will the buyers trainer call your trainer again? To make a deal? Or will the buyers trainer deal with you? |

The buyer's trainer has been dealing with me. They tried the horse, love him and are having him vetted tomorrow! So now we just pray to the vetting Gods that everything goes smoothly. My coach is no longer involved since he is out of the country. The only thing he did was to verify that the horse was fairly represented and that I was an honest person. |

I think Applesauce that while no commission is due, a gift is always appropriate. I sold my old horse last year without any real help from my trainer but gave him a gift anyway for his help with the horse while I had him. He turned it down and I insisted he keep it, I appreciate his advice and expertise. |

Yeppers... just the trainer I suspected... initials are JB. Just gotta say... the second week of Culpeper was pretty boring without "JB" there. I can't imagine how you get thru a lesson... the man makes us laugh too hard. How wonderful to have a trainer you trust and makes showing so much fun. I'm guessing (no more betting ) he'll say you don't owe him anything. Make him a great Margarita and he'll be thrilled.

i would get him a present, but no commission. I, of course, would never expect anyone to expect a commission unless it had been agreed to up front (i.e., if I do work for you to buy/sell horse, you have to pay me x % or as otherwise agreed). of course, I think, in general, the horse world seems to have the "palm out" syndrome, your horse trainer definitely not being one of those people. |

OMT, You have no idea! Working with him is an absolute riot and we always have a good time. He's very funny and sarcastic but makes you work your butt off. Last lesson I had with him I had a pretty bad miss...Jason started clapping and said, "Woooohoooooo! That was BEAUTIFUL!" I'll try to think of something nice to do for him since he did put in a good word for me and my horse. |

The first week of the July Culpeper's... Jason was in TRue form... My daughter is in Hunter Ring 1 having a morning schooling lesson with her beloved but rather serious trainer. Kiddo is riding her green horse that's capable of spooking any second. the lesson was getting pretty intense, on the verge of a "break thru", daughter is concentrating intently and working hard... and then comes Jason . He walks into the ring and starts chucking berries at kiddo's head... He follows the fence rail all the way around to the center pavillion, chucking berries till kiddo finally had to break down and laugh. JB's Reason ... kiddo was too serious and needed to remember to have fun. (of course, Madam Trainer, who's in the center of the ring, couldn't see berry chucking JB
)Paybacks... Jason left his half chaps and hat on our golf cart. Kiddo hung them from the top of Hunter Ring 1's in gate tent. |
