My last one was quite entertaining. First time over at trainer's farm (I'd ridden with him a handful of times at my own barn). Jumps are in one of the fields, and we go school through this monster grid that ends with a nice gallop up to a 3'6" vertical (I remember it being 3'6", others have since told me 3'9". Either way, it was about a foot bigger than anything I'd ever jumped on this horse). We eventually nail the exercise, and I am high as a kite. We move over and jump a couple "scary" fences, which Dunn has no issue with. Then we head for this 3'ish plank fence that I'm not seeing as being all that frightening. So we gallop on up, and I'm thinking we're going to nail it on the first try, and suddenly I'm on the fence and bouncing down to the ground. Little bastard of a horse pulls out his infamous reining-style stop and launches me. Confidence goes POOF. I get back on after a few minutes of my lesson partner telling me to stop being a weenie and go jump a few other fences before we call it quits. I did conquer that plank the next time we were over there. First try, no issues. Thus proving that my horse has discovered the perfect spot and will accept nothing less. Jerk. |

Hmmm....it was recent. Last week. Training my fat OTTB ex-broodmare who is having a disagreement with me about wanting to give up "retirement" status to resume a riding career. <_< When I asked for a trot she unexpectedly cantered and bucked a few times....I lost both stirrups and was sort of propped between her neck and the saddle thinking IF she stopped bucking I'd be in great shape.....but IF she threw in a big one I'd be over her head....and on MY head. So I bailed out and happily ended on my feet BUT nearly took my fingernail off trying not to let go of the reins. Ouch. Still hurts. And I did get back on and finished my ride, but I was not happy. Really didn't want her to *win* by bucking me off....but my sanity prevailed and I thought it really wasn't worth getting really hurt.....my pride is still hurt. |

My last unscheduled dismount ended up in a trip to the emergency room after I decided to use my head to test the Mohs hardness scale of a stone in front of a coop on a cross-country course. I sat for two exams the next day in school. |

Was at a schooling jumper show at my school in January. The pony I was riding had apparently schooled badly in the morning (I wasn't there when she was schooled) and nobody told me about the note the person who schooled her had left for me (Sit and drive to the jumps, especially the blue one!). Yeah. We didn't warm up very well and it was windy outside and the door was blowing a bit at the end she hates when we went to do our first course, she refused the first jump but then I got her over it. We got to the blue jump, she started to refuse. She stopped. I kicked and went to turn her away and have another go and she bolted over the jump, I totally wasn't expecting it and went flying and landed on my hands and knees. I kind of wish I'd been told that when she was schooled, she was made to go over the jump from a standstill when she stopped, maybe I would have been a bit more prepared? |
