Tell me about your last unplanned dismount. Mr. DQ just had his first - he decided he wanted to try to bareback ride. <_< The saving grace was he did stay in the pasture fenced area....Now, mind you, Gunner is a GOOD BOY, but he ain't dead. The neighbors also decided to play on the disc of death, AND the other neighbors were playing motocross on mini bikes AND the lawn was being mowed. My Safety Nazi self tried to stop him.... ha. All went swell (for almost 30 minutes of this!!) until the mower hit something metal....Gunner did a step to the right, Mr. DQ exited down to the ground stage left. Nothing really hurt but his pride. Mine? A year ago - entering the woods. Bambi startled Grace and she did a 180. I did not. And you? |

Eh, just two weekends ago. Was chatting with my riding buddy, who talks very softly. I turned to hear her reply just as we went under a large pine tree that we could easily fit under. A broken off branch grabbed my pants, pulled me to the right, I said Whoa!, horse said "ack, its the tree monster, I must save myself!" and skittered left, leaving me hanging till I landed on the tree roots. Then, to add insult to injury, she buggered off home, the brat!! I jogged three miles worried sick that she was playing in the road, caught in a bush, being chased by dogs.... Turns out she took the shortest route home, and was happily grazing in the hay field when I got there. We are now re-inforcing that Whoa means WHOA!! Over and over in the arena. When we are done with that, we will do emergency dismounts, and she had darn well better stand there until told to move. It had been years since I had fallen off, guess I was due

Mine was recent! I was riding trainer's horse. He can be difficult, but he was REALLY GOOD that day - yay. End of the ride, we're both tired and sweaty, we're walking out of the ring to go for a stroll to cool out. I ask my boyfriend to hand me a water bottle. He does, I lean forward to take it...and horse decides it's a TB-eating water bottle and jumps to the side, right out from underneath me. I got up, showed him the water bottle (still scary!), re-mounted and finished our walk. Dumb, but I hadn't fallen off in ages before that, so I'm hoping that now I won't have another fall for ages! |

At a show in Feb. Chilly day with coolers all around. Slight wind gusts. In the schooling ring, just walking around. Here comes horse with a cooler on it's arse, then here comes the wind gust. Like a sail on a ship. Bear says eff this, I'm outta here. He does a 180 to the left, off I go, off Bear goes to impress everyone with his canter. Loyal friends tell me, to soothe my bruised pride, you never truly own your horse until you fall off it. I truly own DaBear now. ~ I've learned, he always spooks the same, and now, I'm ready for it~ |

I refuse to answer for superstitious reasons. But I will tell you about a fall that Mr. Fishy had. He was riding Miles down our irrigation ditch trail, cooling him out after a ride in the arena. Miles is usually the numero uno trail pony and is always better outside of the arena than in it. This particular day, though, the neighbor at the end of the ditch had gotten new piglets. PIGLETS!!! Miles said eff that and spun, trotted towards home , and left Mr. Fishy hanging in the air. Mr. Fishy was unharmed, although startled. He got up and started walking home; Miles stopped, apparently realizing that Mr. Fishy was no longer on his back, and turned back down the trail to get him! I thought that was pretty cute!

That is Gunner. IF he spooks he ALWAYS spooks to the right. Always. Mr D and I had a talk about dirty spookers that go any which way and you never know. Da Gunderman is an exit stage right man. I don't mean to jinx anyone, (<---No falling vibes to all!!!) I just wanted Mr D to see that EVERYONE comes off at least once.

Just last week, which I hope means... nah, I won't jinx it. ![]() The horse didn't do anything naughty, just tripped and went down in a heap. It was one of those that happened s-o-o-o slowly, I had plenty of time to say to myself, "Oh man, I'm going to get really dirty. What was I thinking? Why on earth did I feel the need to ride on Friday the 13th?" The horse not only managed to avoid landing on me, he got up first, and stood right there next to me, waiting for me to get up. Good boy! |

My last unplanned dismount was completely out of the blue...on a catchride...that I had ridden before. Got on, took 3 steps, and the fireworks began. I didn't last 8 seconds. Not even sure I lasted 5. Landed on my face. Ouch. I'm okay now, but was awfully sore! |

Not the last time, but the most memorable recently....in the appointments during the ladies sidesaddle at PG last year. Corey was breathing fire and unloaded me with a quick bucking left turn. Up side? I did not let go of the reins so he didn't do his usual victory gallop. This lady had to pick up her stirrup, and exit the ring with sand all over everything.

I think... and maybe Julia/Katie can fill me in if I am forgetting something-- but my last unplanned dismount was approximately 2 years ago, on Shane, just schooling at home-- trying to get him over a jump during the "he's completely neurological only we haven't figured it out becaue trainer says he's *lazy* phase." Have I falled off since then? I don't think so?! Oh wait... wait... yes I did. I was riding Stoney in the indoor in a lesson with Wendy, doing a jumper style course. I saw no distance to a rollback to a coop and rather than pushing, started to hold. Poor Stoney had nowhere to go so he stopped, I went off over his head on the other side of the fence and stubbed my wrist. Yes. That's right, my last fall was off my 18 year old 14.2 pony! I thought I was going to fall off SEVERAL times during horse shopping. I think only fear of a strange horse stepping on my crumped body kept me on! |

Well, my last unplanned dismount was horrible and I now have 5" of surgical steel in my leg...so let's not talk about that. Let's talk about Mr. Snaffle. He's an Occasional Trail Rider. We were in Cancun a few years ago and decided to go for a trail ride. Mr. Snaffle and I decide to opt for the 'easy' ride. We're in Mexico and we don't need to go yahooing on some horses we don't know. We have a nice, leisurely ride to the beach. When we get to the beach, the caballeros ask 'Who wants to gallop in the ocean along the beach?' Next thing I know, Mr. Snaffle is asking to join in. Well, if Mr. Snaffle is going to gallop on the beach, then I am darn well going to gallop on the beach. The caballeros say 'DON'T pass the horse in front of you.'The horse in front of me is poke, poke, poking along. I say 'screw the no passing zone', so I nicely pass the horse and gallop down the beach. Mr. Snaffle is behind me...I think. Where is Mr. Snaffle? After arriving at the end of my gallop, I look behind me and he's at the beginning of the beach...standing knee-high in the water, wringing out his shirt. No horse in sight. Turns out his horse wasn't so good at passing. He tried to pass the pokey horse, but his horse took a jerky step and Mr. Snaffle plopped right into the water. When he emerged from the water, some fraternity boys applauded. I told him he fell of the best way a person could possibly fall...into the water where you can't get hurt. I hope Mr. DQ is not too bruised! (including his ego) |

My last unplanned dismount was a couple of years ago ... me and BB both did a somersault together There we were cantering along in the sand ring ...1,2,3...1,2,3...1,2,flip....aaack... next thing I knew me and the horse were lying on the ground and me thinking ok I got to move away fast... I got up then he got up. The footing was quite deep in one of the corners and he just somersaulted in a deep deep spot. I was fine and he ended up with scrapes on the backs of his ears, knees and a tonne of sand in his eyes (it looked like he had bags under his eyes!). The (not so) funny thing was this happened to another rider in the exact same spot the week before. It makes me glad that I am now at a barn that actually takes care of their footing

My last unplanned dismount....was 100% my fault! Remind me next time that you don't try to trot your green horse on the bridle trail past the blowing plastic covering the pile of shavings. She WILL spin around faster than you. |

Heh. I will answer the question, but I was too superstitious to read this thread yesterday. I won't read threads about falling off or injuries on days I ride. Anyway...last fall was in the BN warm-up at my first recognized event. I was riding the packer of the century, Orion, and NOT my spooky, tried-to-kill-me-once-already horse whom I fall off of about every 6 months. (Where's the wood...I need to knock on some....it's been almost 8 months since the last time I came off of him). I was tracking right down the quarterline at the canter to let to people tracking left at trot pass. Sideswiper was tracking left, cantering and called "OXER" so I started to leg yield to the rail to stay out of her way. She started to turn, then for some reason only known to her and her maker, she pulled her horse to the outside...'cept Orion and I were on the outside. She plowed her horse into O's shoulder and we both fell off. I hate to say it, but I'm happy she came off too. I would've bee so pissed if it was just me that fell. Poor O is still unhappy about people passing on that side and it's been a month. |

My last unplanned dismount actually left me injured <_< You know how most falls will just leave you shaky, but still able to get back up and ride? Well, it was in February of this year in the indoor, and my horse left out a stride in front of a square oxer. I got thrown so far forward that I completely came off. I got the wind knocked out of me, but thought I was okay. When I tried to mount again, I couldn't lift my right leg over the saddle. It hurt so bad that I was trying hard not to cry. I got home and spent a horrible night in bed, I couldn't sleep, my leg was killing me, it hurt to move it at all. Finally my mother ordered me into the car the next morning, and we trotted ourselves off to the ER. The doctor was nice and all, but he said I tore my adductor muscle on the inside of my leg and couldn't ride for a month while it healed. That's right, gents and ladies, a MONTH. I think I almost verbally assaulted him, I was so stunned and mad. Luckily no broken bones yet, but that was definitely my worst. |
